This could end up being my product of the year: I love it. Quite simply, the two versions attach to either a Tempest Composite or Tempest Brolly to convert them to a genuine two-man shelter. Essentially, an elasticated section sits over the Tempest rib and then the whole thing extends forwards to an Armo-style front pole. It’s ridiculously easy to set up and, once it’s on, you can easily get two bedchairs in lengthways.

As a Tempest brolly user I have only ever had one slight gripe and that was the open front allowing all manner of flying critters to swarm inside for cover. I’m sure I am not alone in this and in response, Trakker has produced these Insect Panels which clip effortlessly on to the Tempest frame and have proven an absolute godsend. I attach mine as soon as I set the Tempest up, not giving the mozzies and their mates any time to descend. I will add here that it’s also important to use a groundsheet if you are going to really eradicate them because many flies and suchlike will come up out of the grass in the evening.

Exclusive First Look! I remember when Trakker launched these for the awesome Pioneer a good few years back, and now the Yorkshire-based bivvy market leader is doing likewise for the hugely successful Tempest. This is music to my ears, being a Tempest brolly user, and I can’t wait for them to actually hit the shelves of Trakker stockists. Available in different sizes to fit the brolly, V2, Air and two-man, they are simple to attach via three small poles that fit straight into the front poles of the shelter itself. The material then just clips to the other poles around the respective Tempest and that’s it.

UK Exclusive First Review! The improved version of Prologic’s Frame-X bivvy, I first got a glimpse of the X1 at Carp In The Park, but then more recently I saw it properly while out on the 7 Top Tips shoot with Prologic-backed Rik Johnson this month. I was immediately impressed by how quickly the innovative X-Frame design allowed Rik to set it up, literally a few seconds, even quicker than a pram-hood design. Once up, it was also absolutely drum tight and extremely solid. Even my efforts to shake the life out of it saw the X1 barely yield an inch.

The Fast & Light brolly has been hugely popular with its initial target angler, the guy who travels extra light and doesn’t want the hassle of having to carry a full-blown system around. Groundsheet, infill panel and any additional extras mean burdensome loads to these guys. However, the brolly is so good that lots of other anglers took a shine to it – those fishing slightly longer session and wanting a little but more from their shelter. So, by popular demand, Aqua introduced these wraps to create more significant coverage for those who want it.

Dan Murrell’s verdict. . . I couldn’t recommend it more! 5/5 Regarded as a well-seasoned brolly angler, I was quite surprised when I first saw the Basecamper from Avid-backed Ian Russell and was actually keen to try one out for myself.

Many modern carp anglers look for ease of use in a product, and why not? With limited time on the bank you don’t want to waste it setting things up when you could be looking for fish or getting those rods in the water. This is why brollies have come back in fashion, but they aren’t very good when used as a long-term session shelter. Bridging the gap between convenience, ease of use and unrivalled weather protection, the XTI Supadome was born. Erected in no time via a push brolly-type system, the Supadome provides a large internal footprint capable of housing all your tackle, food and more while out on the bank.

First Look! Similarly to all the short rods now available, several companies are producing compact versions of their bivvies and, in the Reflex, Fox has nailed it. Although I haven’t fished from it, I did spend two nights under this one at Carp In The Park and I absolutely loved it. Not just for its small nature (which in truth, as a brolly angler, is still amply big enough for me) but for the features it boasts and the all-round build quality. RipStop Ven-Tec material creates a rugged, waterproof and breathable material that will not let you down and which, if you nick it accidentally, will not worsen.

Few companies boast the heritage for superbly made, top-end and respected carp gear than Aqua Products, and with that came the range of Aqua classics made in modern, more hi-tech materials. This is exactly that, the original Aqua Brolly, with the same dimensions, but Aquatexx fabric. Anybody who was anybody in days gone by recognised Aqua as being the leading maker of bivvies and brollies, initially hand-constructed by founder Chris Manifold from a tiny workshop in Cheshire. If you were really somebody then you owned one, but the superb quality, UK build and limited production made it difficult to buy them at times.

Following on from the award-winning, highly successful, Royale Classic One-Man, the Euro Dome has been built around the winning design. It offers the same practicality and function ability, only in a larger format for the angler preferring to fish longer sessions or, as the name suggests, who ventures to Europe, where a little extra space is always very welcome. Differing from other larger shelters, the Royale Euro Dome boasts a completely removable inner dome, which is approximately the same size as the Classic predecessor. This, of course, means the overall footprint of the Euro is larger than the Classic, lending itself perfectly to the angler wishing to take plenty of kit.

Not every angler wants to set up a goliath bivvy with overwrap to keep them sheltered through the summer nights or even surprise daytime showers, and that’s understandable. However, what about a simple two-rib structure that can be erected in seconds and boasts tension poles, groundsheet and even rod-retaining straps? Ideal for the angler wanting a little more protection on day sessions or for a quick to erect night-time shelter, the Discovery CX Low Rider is ideal and a great item to have at your disposal. Lightweight with a supplied carry bag and pegs, this is everything you need to keep sheltered yet not weigh you down, so you can move quickly and effectively when needed, and we think it is pretty cheap too. (DM) £74.

There are literally hundreds of shelters on the market, all of which offer some benefit or other, from ease of use, large floor space, small packed-away dimensions and all other manner of stuff to entice you to use them. However, Sonik has, thankfully, produced the XTI with one thing in mind – comfort. Let’s face it, that’s what a bivvy should primarily offer you, unless you’re the ‘take as little as you can’ travelling-type angler. With generous dimensions, a luxurious 20,000HD Armatek outer and solid three-rib construction, this will keep you happy through the very worst conditions.

Summer can predominantly mean warm nights and quick sessions, and there is nothing more annoying than having to lug your large two-man winter bivvy around the lake. Well you no longer have to. This awesome little shelter boasts all the features you would expect to find on larger bivvies but without the weight and bulky nature. The bivvy alone weighs in at a rather minimal 5.

With the good weather finally here, it’s nice to pack away the large cumbersome bivvy and dust off the brolly. However, with the English weather being unpredictable, to say the least, it’s a good idea to have a brolly that can cope with the ever-changing conditions. The Extreme TX Brolly System is such a product. Built from the extremely waterproof 20,000mm HH Hydra-Tex material, this shelter practically shrugs water off in an instant.

Spacious, sturdy and great value for money, that’s exactly what we thought when we took a look at this goliath shelter. Perfectly suited for anglers wishing to fish long sessions, planning a trip overseas or who like to take everything and the kitchen sink. Built using the state-of-the-art Windtex fabric, it is both 100 per cent waterproof and breathable. Boasting a stereo weave, the PU-coated polyester fabric is rated to 20,000mm Hydrostatic Head, while allowing moisture to escape for a condensation-free space.
