Avid Basecamper Bivvy

Dan Murrell’s verdict... I couldn’t recommend it more! 5/5

Regarded as a well-seasoned brolly angler, I was quite surprised when I first saw the Basecamper from Avid-backed Ian Russell and was actually keen to try one out for myself. Having used it for several sessions now, in all honesty, I am a fan.

I wouldn’t use it every day, merely because on my water I fit in where possible, among the reeds and shrubbery trying to minimise my presence as much as possible. However, I can’t help but take it to every day-ticket venue I have visited since owning it. I have plenty of headroom, allowing me to sit upright while typing out features or watching the water, and the abundance of space I have even when using my wide bedchair is remarkable. I believe this is down to the staggered pole layout.

With an attached peak, the coverage goes one step further, allowing me to stretch out and cook at the front of the bivvy no matter what the weather. Without doubt, one of the biggest edges is the rear vents, which can be opened from the inside! Now this may seem minor but it really is a serious edge; no more running out in the rain and, equally, I don’t have to get out of bed to change the internal temperature. The supportive arms double as rod restraints, which keeps them out of the way of the main door, and you can easily house six rods; so that’s three fishing rods, spod and marker with one remaining. With the groundsheet removed and the open front it weighs as light as, if not lighter than, some brollies on the market while offering you superior shelter and a plethora of options. Without doubt, one of the best shelters I have tried. (DM)
