The new range of hooks from fresh-faced company Spotted Fin is making a noise behind the scenes, and rightfully so. Encompassing four of the most popular patterns of all time, we are certain there will be one for you in the TurningPoint stable. Featuring Curved, Longshank Curved, Wide Gape and Straight Point, it doesn’t matter whether you prefer fishing pop-ups or bottom baits, you can rest assured that you will have the perfect presentation every time. One pattern that immediately caught my eye is the Longshank Curved.

Marc Coulson’s verdict - Easy to splice, nice flecked-green colour and very reliable There’s a proliferation of lead-free leaders nowadays, with very few terminal-tackle companies not producing one and, while I cannot claim to have tried them all, I’ve certainly either used or played around with most. As I talk about in my diary this month, my new syndicate water is extremely weedy, so I made a call to my old mate Lewis Read at Gardner and did my best Oliver Twist impression. It worked, and the generous old so-and-so sent me some of this to use. The mottled green finish is perfect and, to my liking, it’s a little thicker than some others.

For a very long time now I, and I’m sure many, many others, have played around with various ways of trying to eject the lead when using a helicopter rig. The problem has always been that to secure the lead on the cast, but then be able to eject it when needed, has not been an easy thing to achieve. The key there is ‘when needed’ because there have been a few systems created but mostly they dump the lead on every retrieve – a massive bugbear of mine. However, Korda has come up with a virtually foolproof system that does exactly what you need it to and you can switch from retaining the lead to dropping it very easily.

The result is an outstanding copolymer main line that has been integrated with a heavy sinking additive to ensure it is one of the fastest-sinking monofilaments on the market. With exceptional abrasion-resistant properties and outstanding knot strength, it gives you the confidence required when fishing demanding situations in search of that special carp.

Although there are so many alternatives these days, I must admit to still being a fan of leadcore. I don’t honestly think that using it has ever cost me a bite, so I’m in no rush to switch. There has always been an issue with safely setting up a helicopter rig so that the top bead is secure enough on the cast but will release the hook link in the event of a breakage. The Leadcore Stop Beads are designed specifically with this purpose in mind and they work brilliantly.

The legendary Soft Steel has undergone a transformation. Now with two colour options, Light Camo and Dark Camo, it offers you the opportunity to tailor the line to your fishing. Both colorations will break up the outline of the line when it sits on the lake bed, making it much harder to see. Due to its new line technology, Fox has also managed to reduce the stretch level in the lines, making them much more sensitive for bite indication.

Coated hook links are by no means a revelation in carp fishing, having been around for many years. However, the brand-new Ultra Skin from Gardner has many attributes that have been significantly improved in terms of colour, ease of use, feel and finish. Available in three breaking strains, there’s a version that will cater for every angler’s needs. The 15lb has proven particularly popular with specimen and carp anglers alike; with a fine diameter of 0.
