In more recent years, drop-off inline leads have become very popular and have taken a leading role in my approach. I like to use heavy leads when I can get away with it but it’s just as important that when I’m attached to the carp there’s no lead hindering my contact. I opted to test out these leads when they arrived at the office because they have been specifically designed for use as a safety drop-off lead system. The groove allows either the main line or leader to be situated flush against the lead, which reduces the damage that can often be caused against the lake bed or snags.

I have used the long versions when fishing with PVA bags, in conjunction with Avid’s excellent In-Line Groove leads and they work pretty well. The longer stem gives something to work with when tying the bags off, but I have found them to be quite a loose fit. This is a problem if I have to push the lead down into the bag once filled because the insert simply pushes through the lead rather than taking the lead with it. They also do not really suit many leads other than Avid’s, which is fine because I guess they’re not designed to.

The addition of a coloured topper to a hook bait is undoubtedly effective and these stops from Avid combine that with the hair stop. I only started using them when Avid produced the buoyant version. If I have a ‘sighter’ on the bait then I want it sat proud so that the carp can actually see it!The large versions are ideal for tipping a trimmed, barrel-shaped hook bait; something that I use a lot inside bags. So far they’ve worked, particularly the yellow ones, and I like the fact that they sit nice and flush with the baits once the small ‘hook’ is drawn inside.

The long-awaited Avid Reaction Hooks hit the shops recently and they haven’t disappointed. There are four patterns in the range – LSK (longshank), CHD (chod), CRV (Curve) and WGP (wide gape), so there’s a pattern for every presentation in a wide range of sizes. Out of the pack the hooks are sticky sharp and finished in an unobtrusive non-glare green. All patterns are available in barbed and barbless options and with 12 in a pack they’re great value for money too.

I’ve reviewed these bags many times over the years and felt compelled to do so again in this issue, given our Buyer’s Guide feature on solid bags. They remain the most consistent bags that I’ve used for my fishing over a prolonged period. I can’t remember the last time I had a seam break on me and, given that I tie my bags as tightly as I possibly can, this is a huge indictment. While there are several sizes available I only really use the size 5s because they suit my style of fishing.

When compiling this month’s ‘Essentials’ feature I was drawn to explain my choice of solid bags to one of the TC team. I happily use two or three brands, but I have found these Avid bags to be my favourites. The PVA itself is strong and the seams are extremely reliable. I have yet to have one of these bags break on me, which has definitely not been the case with some other bags I have used in the past.

Okay, so I know the majority of you may not experienced fishing with a braided main line and may be looking at the price tag with open eyes and a dropped jaw, but let me tell you working out to around £30 a spool it will be one of the wisest moves you have ever made. Utilising 100% Dyneema PF FIbres, the CB2000 has absolutely zero stretch making it the ultimate line to lead around and of course play fish on. It is true that it can be a very knee trembling experience the first time you play a carp, but as you feel every twist and turn and hear the sing of the braid in the wind you will be hard pushed to find a more electric and exciting means of playing a carp. I have been using the 30lb breaking strain variant and with a minimal line diameter of just 0.
