Having just undertaken a Buyer’s Guide review on hook links, I was keen to give a few a go on my next few sessions on the bank. Hook-link material can be a personal thing so it always pays to have a play around. I used the N-Trap Semi Stiff in weedy green for fishing this winter because it blends in well with the lake bed and its inherent stiffness helps to prevent tangles. The coating is resilient so it won’t break when tying knots in it.

I doubted, at first, the need for a coated braid that was now stiff, given their initial intended use for forming stiff/supple combi links. However, from an anti-tangle point of view this stuff is spot-on. It’s supple enough to provide good presentation but it never tangles, even on casts over 100 yards. It’s user-friendly and the coating strips easily without failing in spots where you don’t want it to.

On the rare occasions that I fish a chod rig I prefer to do so ‘naked’ style, without a leadcore leader. These kits allow quick and easy construction of naked chods and, so far, they appear to be super-safe as well. They’re also very neat and unobtrusive on the bottom. The only downside is that a couple of the individual components are not easy to reuse and even with smaller pop-ups I do still have to add some putty to the rig’s swivel.

TC reader Geraint Thomas says: "When Marc Coulson e-mailed me and gave me a choice of a few products to review I immediately jumped at these, given that there is a total leader ban on my water. "This problem is solved with the taper from 40lb down to 10lb. Imagine it as a giant tapered leader that fills your spool. I managed to fit it almost perfectly on my reel, so there was no need for backing or, importantly, trimming any of the thicker line off.

As an avid rig putty user I was asked to give this a go and, wow, I certainly have been missing out. I began using it like a crayon and by rubbing it along supple braided hooklengths it prevented them looping up once the solid PVA bag had melted. It was easy to use, can be applied instantly and immediately cast out. After I saw how effective it was, I began using it in larger pieces, as you would use rig putty.

Okay, there’s only so much you can say about PVA cord (or string, if you prefer) but like anything in fishing I am very fussy in what I use, right down to the tiniest detail. I’m no stranger to fishing PVA stringers of three to five baits over a spread of boilies but I’m particular about what PVA I use to do so. It’s a similar story when it comes to tying off solid PVA bags. Tape stretches and some strings are not robust enough.
