I have been using braided main lines as my line of choice for over two years now and when I first saw the new Fox Submerge I knew I would have to give it a test. Available in both 25lb and 40lb breaking strains each of which can be brought on 300m or 600m spools, the Submerge is produced in a blend of dark camo patterns that will help break up the outline over various lakebed varieties. What immediately stood out when I was spooling my reels up was the incredibly thin diameter with relation to breaking strain. At a mere 0.

Marc Coulson’s verdict - Easy to splice, nice flecked-green colour and very reliable There’s a proliferation of lead-free leaders nowadays, with very few terminal-tackle companies not producing one and, while I cannot claim to have tried them all, I’ve certainly either used or played around with most. As I talk about in my diary this month, my new syndicate water is extremely weedy, so I made a call to my old mate Lewis Read at Gardner and did my best Oliver Twist impression. It worked, and the generous old so-and-so sent me some of this to use. The mottled green finish is perfect and, to my liking, it’s a little thicker than some others.

My favourite hooks, Muggas, are now available in a beefed-up version, boasting 30 per cent stronger, high-carbon wire. I took some to France with me and have used them here at home too. Despite their thicker gauge they remain sharp and the covert coating is inconspicuous on the lake bed too. RRP: £4.

When asked to test the Gardner Muggas it didn’t take long to report back – I have been using them for as long as I can remember. Whether I’m using the size 12 for zig fishing or the size 6 for bottom baits, I am 100 per cent confident in their hooking potential. With an inturned eye and a sweeping, curved shank, as soon as the hook link is straightened the hook flips and takes hold. The hook-holds have been confidence inspiring; they also don’t require the addition of shrink tubing to create an aggressive rig.

These clips are used in Gardner’s ultra-safe lead-clips-style setup. The dedicated pin holds the swivel in place and a large bore allows leaders to easily pass through in their alternative ‘leader-safe’ setup. Available in four camou versions. GardnerCovert Multi ClipsRRP: £3.

TC reader Jamie Walters says: "When these first arrived I wasn’t entirely sure what they were, but a quick look at the rear of the packet and it became clear. "I received two sizes, presumably for different-sized hooks, but I found that the larger size was the only one that I really needed: a size 6 or 8 being my most preferred hook. The smaller version looked a little too small for any hooks that I use. "They fit easily enough, but you must remember to thread on a rig ring first, which I omitted to do on several occasions when first using them, which is really annoying.

When I opened the small box that contained this line there was a note inside from TC editor Marc Coulson, which explained that this line was bulletproof. In fact, Marc said he rated it as one of the strongest lines he’d ever used and he’d deliberately sent it to me following a telephone conversation where I’d enquired about strong lines. So, after a couple of months using it, would I agree with him? Absolutely! The lake I fish is pretty weedy and this, plus the naturals that abound in it, put any main line under immense scrutiny. So far, where I’d expect to change the last few metres of any line after almost every trip, this has stood up much better than most.

On a recent feature I was given a spool of the Pro Carp main line to have a play with. On first inspection the slick finish and coloration seemed perfect for my fishing, where the dark finish would blend in brilliantly with the lake bed. I often have to cast over 100 yards in my current fishing, so I accompany my main line with a shockleader to get the most distance without compromising too much on strength and abrasion resistance. I chose the 0.

The team at Gardner has not disappointed once again, bringing the Stiff variation of the ever-popular Ultra Skin to the market. Ideally suited to situations where you are fishing over a clear debris-free bottom, the coating can be stripped back to reveal a supple braid inner hook-link material. Once steamed, the hook link provides superb anti-tangle properties but also improves rig reaction speed, providing a straight line of contact between hook and lead. The durable material also means that when tightening down knots you won’t break the coating in the process, meaning perfect rigs time and time again.
