Following numerous requests and the popularity of the one-man HQ, Avid has produced the two-man version. It houses all the features found in the one-man but boasts enough space to accommodate two bedchairs, ideal for the angling couple, the angler who fishes abroad or the person who just likes a little more space. It’s a simplistic and efficient bivvy system that was the first shelter to bring the revolutionary inner wrap, eliminating condensation without the hassle of attaching a winter skin. Once you’ve put it in place it can be left inside permanently, making it a very quick shelter to erect.

The HQ twin skin broke into the carp scene and made a big impact as the first-ever bivvy to feature a built-in twin skin as standard. Not only eliminating condensation, it also completely eradicates the need for a winter skin and, what’s more, once it has been installed it never has to be taken out again. So how can this already well-regarded shelter be even better? Now boasting a new improved internal layout, there is even more usable internal space, if you can believe it. The unique separated pole design allows the shelter to easily accommodate a large bedchair, all your tackle and even enough room to house your stove and let you brew up and cook inside.

The High Top has been uniquely designed with space in mind, catering for anglers looking for a shelter offering unrivalled headroom. The distinctive front section allows the angler to walk in and out of the bivvy with ease, offering space to easily get changed in or out of waterproofs or to merely stand and watch the water. The height isn’t the only benefit, though, the more conventionally sized rear section is more than wide enough to comfortably fit two bedchairs while still accommodating tackle and luggage. With a removable front panel and rear vent the HQ High Top is effective as a shelter throughout the warm summer months, while the supplied clip-in inner skin and overwrap boast triple-skin protection for even the most arduous of weather conditions.

I first saw the original HQ when out on features with Avid-backed Ian Russell and, initially, didn’t pay it too much attention. I’ve seen a million and one bivvies so I don’t always notice individual ones at first. However, over time, I grew to be pretty impressed with the ‘twin-skin’ design. This isn’t twin skin as in having a wrap attached; no, it’s what you might call a traditional construction but with an added (it’s removable) fabric inner lining.

First impressions of this gazebo-type shelter are not immediately conducive to stopping you in your tracks and making you dash out to your nearest Avid stockist to buy one. However, once you look at how it works and open your mind to the possibilities, it becomes more and more impressive. With four side panels, each with a full central zip, you basically park it over up to four bivvies to create a large shelter, compete with communal area for socials, extra gear or just that added space and comfort. We saw this one with two bivvies at a 90-degree angle to each other and immediately imagined how useful it would be to the hordes of anglers who fish as pairs at venues like Linear.

We covered the original Tardis bivvy a few issues back, offering the angler a compact shelter with plenty of room internally. Well, we have the latest addition right here. The aptly named RT version, standing for Road Trip Edition, is ideal for the angler on the move. Whether it is short sessions you fish, or like me you prefer to get tucked away in the overgrown abandoned swims, then look no further.

BARGAIN!Okay, so we have seen this product before. However, when we covered the shelter initially, the product was £649. 99, now it can be picked up for an amazing £300 less. The unique High Top has been designed with space in mind, catering for anglers looking for a shelter offering unrivalled headroom.

Okay, so it’s fair to say that I rarely use a full-blown bivvy these days, preferring instead my brolly. However, as we head into winter, the comfort of a proper bivvy might be called for. If so, and having tested this one, on and off, for some time now, I have to say that I’d be perfectly happy using it. Without having a ridiculously oversized footprint, the Vizor Lite boasts absolutely loads of internal room, thanks to the spaced bars at the base of the pramhood design.

Marc Coulson’s verdict. . . great bivvy, especially if you like lots of room.

Last month we looked in detail at the complete system available from Cyprinus, well here we will be solely focusing on the space-saving brolly variation. Utilising the new and improved Hydro-Tec material, which has been proven to resist water with a hydrostatic head of over 1,0000mm, the Magnetix is among the most waterproof and weather-resistant shelters in its price range. With a more efficient, compact, space-saving device, the eight-rib design offers oodles of room and, more specifically, valuable headroom within the 60in frame. With upgraded, black, powder-coated poles, the Magnetix looks as good as it sounds.

The Cyprinus Magnetix is a complete shelter that’s ideal for year-round use. Constructed from the new and improved Hydro-Tec fabric, it is without doubt one of the most resilient, waterproof and weather-resistant shelters on the market. What really makes this one a game changer is its sheer versatility. Supplied with infill panels, overwrap and mozzie net, this 60in shelter can be used as an open-faced umbrella offering panoramic views or can be erected as a double-skin, fully enclosed shelter for when you require that extra comfort.

Constructed from a Hydro-Tec material, the 12,000mm hydrostatic head, waterproof outer skin boasts an intelligent membrane that is not only 100 per cent waterproof but also breathable, helping to rid the age-old problem of condensation. The colossal structure has been specifically designed to provide maximum protection and stability, even in the roughest of weather conditions. The impressive headroom and versatility makes the Maxus of the most feature-packed, large, two-man bivvies on the market. With three separate infill variations available, the shelter can be erected and tailored to suit any fishing scenario.
