Marc Coulson’s verdict. . . If Carlsberg made monofilament main lines… I’m always extremely wary of saying that any version is my favourite in a category of product, but I’m hard pushed to remember using a monofilament main line that has impressed me more than Exocet.

The first set of digital scales I ever tested were made by Fox and, while they were entirely new and took some getting used to, I kind of liked them. It didn’t take long, however, for me to return to a traditional dial scale and I’ve not paid digital scales much attention ever since. However, these new digis from Fox arrived with a request to review them, so I took a closer look. They’re extremely easy to set up and, even better, are quick and easy to zero once the weigh sling has been hung on them.

We love these! - great product at a great price Designed around the medium-sized-water premise, the new Emblem BR 25A is a compact size coupled with big-pit performance. In recent years it appears the trend has been to either go back to ‘cult retro’ reels or look for large big-pit machines because bigger is better, or so everyone thought. It will be equally at home on an intimate five-acre water as it will on a large expanse of 80 acres. Is this possible? According to the technical guys at Daiwa it is not only possible but a reality, while keeping the price within a sensible range.

To match the impressive Gravity X range of rods, Sonik has introduced one of each of the utility rods and they both appear, at first inspection, to be well up to the task. I’ve not had the chance to really put them through their paces, but a few casts on a local lake have provided me with at least a first impression and, I must say, they feel spot-on. Both boast a clean crisp action, with the spod rod obviously being the beefier. In fact, it’s so beefy that I had to load a spod right up to feel like I was properly compressing it, but bear in mind that I do not consider myself a huge caster.

Ideal for foreign trips and longer sessions with your mate or even family members, this neat tent sits in your swim (or between yours and your mate’s bivvies) and offers the ideal place to socialise in between bites. Although not sold as a cooking tent for various health and safety reasons, I reckon that as long as you do so with care you can easily get away with preparing all your food in here. Failing that, set up a bait table, fill the whole thing with beer and use it for evening socials and suchlike. It’s extremely easy to erect and doesn’t take up too much room in your motor when packed away in its carryall.

I first had a play around with this early last year and immediately saw where the name comes from – it begins to release tiny items of attractive bait up into the water column literally as soon as it touches down on the lake bed. As with all Sticky’s stuff, it’s made only with quality ingredients – no corner cutting or bulking out with cheap agents here. In fact, Sticky makes a good point on the website in that because there are no bulking agents, you can, if money is a bit tight, safely bulk it out yourself with crumb or similar to make it go further. Ideal for use in stick mixes, it can also be added to spod mixes and PVA bags – only your imagination will restrict its uses in actual fact.

When we heard that the team at Shimano had a new big pit on the market, you can imagine our excitement. Having developed some of the best
carp fishing reels over the years, we automatically set the bar high and this new launch has certainly lived up to our expectations. As soon as we opened the box the improved matt black cosmetics stuck out; this timeless finish will be a great addition to any existing setup and is sure to be a firm favourite among the ‘cult anglers’. Moving onto the reel itself, the instant drag is simply a joy to use.
