Read any rod manufacturer’s brochures and they’ll describe the perfect carp rods that boast huge casting potential as well as the ability to play fish under the rods tips. Whether or not this is even possible is open to debate.
Shimano’s description of the XS1 Intensity touches on that but focuses on the build of the blank and its tip recovery, something that is vital in casting accuracy and distance. It also boasts of a super-slim blank thanks to Shimano’s Cap T technology, whatever that is!
In reality, the boasts are pretty accurate.
Tackle Box’s Lee Jackson says: A sticky additive that can be applied to a hook bait or PVA bag to create a continuous plume of attraction, Lava is denser than water, which means it stays around your baited area seeping across the lake bed, attracting attention where it matters most – your hook bait.
Within minutes it starts to break down, triggering a rich scent and attractive colour. On zigs it will stream off, creating a cloudy column, giving attraction at many levels. Once the liquid reaches the bottom it will stay there until it is disturbed and then create yet another cloud of attraction.
Dan Murrell’s verdict A real joy to use and in my opinion they look pukka !
As I have written in previous reviews, I prefer using a longer than conventional rod, favouring 12ft 6in, 12ft 9in or 13ft models. Having used 12ft models for a few months I was quick to change when a set of Terry Hearn Distance 12ft 9in 3. 5lb test curve came into the office for a Used & Abused review.
Aesthetically, I think it is fair to say that ESP has hit the nail on the head.
We have all used quick-change swivels of some variety and to great effect, being handy to change rigs in no time at all.
However, taking it one step further, the team at Korda has developed the same principle with a crook rather than the conventional elongated eye. Now this may not seem like much, and by no means think we are trying to blow it out of proportion.
However, this helps you fish hook links straight off the swivel quickly and with much more movement.
If you’re an angler who appreciates the finer points in life and likes to spend your time in luxury on the bank then this could be the shelter for you.
Built from a sturdy yet lightweight aluminium three-rib construction and integrated fourth pole peak, the XTI benefits from increased space to protect both you and your tackle, while a subtle pointed apex allows the user plenty of headroom. Rods don’t have to be expensive to be good, and these are the perfect example and would be ideal for newcomers to the sport or someone on a budget who doesn’t want to compromise on quality.
With a progressive action, these are great all-round carp rods. Although you won’t be casting leads to the horizon, there is enough power to comfortably fish on the vast majority of UK carp waters and, of course, you don’t have such a stiff blank that you no longer enjoy playing fish.
These are responsive and bend, which is exactly what you want for modern-day carp angling.
Using good bait is one thing but having a hook bait that stands out from the norm is another and can often result in a quick bite or continuous action.
The range from Sticky needs no introduction, having been on form for the past several seasons, and it has recently launched a few new wafter hook baits to accompany the proven Krill range and the extremely effective Signature flavour profile.
The Signatures are designed as highly attractive single hook baits with a fruity sweet aroma in pastel fluoro colours such as white, yellow and pink. Available in 12mm and 16mm, these can be used in conjunction with snowman presentations, PVA bags or balanced hook baits.
It’s always a pleasure making my annual trip to the ESP headquarters in Oxfordshire, but when I headed down there earlier this year it was with a particular feeling of anticipation.
I I was champing at the bit to see its three big product launches, namely the Onyx reels, Barrel bobbins and these Cryogen hooks.
ESP has, for me, always produced superb hooks in patterns that are useful to carp anglers. They were, as far as I remember, the first to introduce odd sizing (3, 5, 7), which many companies have followed suit in more recently.
I owned one of the original Rig Safes but found it a bit bulky. However, Korda’s newer versions are spot-on. One of these is the Mini Rig Safe Combo and I can’t wait to fill this one with a few rigs of my own.
We love this!
The smaller size, compared with the bigger Rig Safe, which has also been redesigned, is ideal for storing shorter rigs, up to eight inches, and will hold 30 at a time.
