With this test series we take a look at unhooking mats and of course, protection is paramount here. As much as we all love a pocket-friendly product, we honestly believe that this is one product that no angler should scrape on, ever! What we are looking for here is the complete protective package, how much padding is on offer, can the carp be retained for short periods without flapping off or out of the mat and how mobile the entire bundle is. Yes, before you say it, the carp we have used for illustrative purposes is rather large, measuring in at a whopping 84 centimetres long and 56 centimetres from dorsal fin to pelvic fin, hence the tight fit.

Standing for All Season, I have been testing the AS 365 Compact since December and I have been out in very cold conditions, well the brief spells we have encountered anyway.
Being the Compact I thought that by saving space and weight the bag would suffer and be a little chilly. However, I have been pleasantly surprised. Inside there are baffle strips that run the length of the bag and these enable the user to warm the bag much faster because there is less wasted space to heat.
I have never been one to tinker with the mechanics of the kit I use, not beyond a little tightening up or lubrication here and there, but switching to these washers in the spools of my Shimano reels was an absolute revelation (it takes seconds to do, by the way).
Having watched Tony from Future Fishing (it’s the sole distributors for these washers) demonstrate them on the shop’s video page I was intrigued as to just how much difference they would actually make. It’s not difficult to make things look good on a video, so only a try for myself would convince me. However, any suspicions were soon allayed as the simple switching of the washers in the top of the spool of my Ultegra 14000XTDs saw the drag absolutely transformed.
A tough and hard-wearing garment that is constructed from a three-layer system; 100 per cent polyester brushed tricot with laminated membrane and mesh. This over the head item offers a completely waterproof yet breathable smock that with the adjustable-waist drawstring can be tailored to offer the most perfect of fits. With two upper crossover pockets complete with weatherproof zips and a further two lower angled pockets, I believe this would make the ultimate stalking jacket for when the elements are very much against you. Available in brown and moss green it is available in S to XXXL.
One of the most ‘carpy’ hats we have seen in a while. Boasting a heavy knit construction the Headcase is complete with a cosy fleece lining to help retain that all-important head heat. Stretchy in nature, it is a one-size-fits-all product and available in rich burgundy and classic olive green. Oh, by the way, Terry Hearn wears the burgundy one! (DM)

The Tackle Box’s Lee Jackson says: The perfect camera for the angler who wants to film DIY underwater/action footage or still photos without the expense of buying a GoPro-type camera. At around £34. 99 this extremely compact camera is unbelievable value and features a super-wide-angle 120-degree lens, a 2in LCD rear screen and a waterproof housing so that it can be used in water depths up to 30 metres. What’s more, it comes with various mounts/clips so that it can be mounted on a landing net pole, rod, handlebars and suchlike, and a USB cable for charging.
This range has been designed to be fast acting as soon as they enter the water, oozing a rich stream of attractants, flavour and feed-inducing enhancers. With a coarse texture and soft nature, each of the three flavours help to draw carp into the swim and once they get a taste for it, they won’t be leaving in a hurry. The flavours on offer are Spicy Krill, Raspberry & Black Pepper and Coco Maple, each of which offer a unique and distinct flavour profile that will draw you in as well as the carp. (DM)
