At just under £90 the Discovery is the joint cheapest on test, alongside the Chub Vantage. You may be expecting a no thrills, cheap and cheerful product but that is not the case at all. With a very generous external draught skirt there is no way uncomfortable breezes can enter through the zip, which can often cause a restless night’s sleep. Another key feature is the external pocket on the tip of the bag, perfect for either your mobile phone or alarm receiver, keeping it to hand yet protected and close enough to wake you when needed.

The second heaviest on test and one of the slowest to pack away into the supplied canvas carryall, which we must say is the most durable we have come across. The Benchmark offers superb value for money and the fleece lining helps the bag retain a lot of heat internally but can also be switched around to offer the smooth peachskin layer in a matter of minutes. Constructed from several reversible layers, this bag can be utilised all year round, ensuring you can tailor it to your requirements without having to buy another for the warmer seasons. The breathable and waterproof outer is another solid idea from Avid.

New on the market, we were keen to put it through its paces and considering it’s a single-layered bag we were astounded by the results. Minimalist in design, it boasts several unique features that we think are extremely clever and indeed useful. First up, the bottom of the bag utilises a drawcord system and three-quarter-length zip so you can reduce the amount of wasted space at the bottom to help warm the bag up even quicker with your body heat. Staying with the bottom, a detachable, easy to clean heavy-duty foot protector is supplied, while the head end sees two internal handwarmer pockets for wraparound comfort.

After taking up carp fishing around a year ago, I was quick to notice everyone in the office had waders. It was only going out on several features and being out on the bank with some of the TC team that I realised what a valuable piece of kit they truly were. I was fortunate enough when this pair of waders made its way in to the office and I was quick to stake my claim to see just how beneficial they really would be. I have used these around a dozen times now when I have been out on the bank, and I have been nothing but impressed.

Okay, so I know the majority of you may not experienced fishing with a braided main line and may be looking at the price tag with open eyes and a dropped jaw, but let me tell you working out to around £30 a spool it will be one of the wisest moves you have ever made. Utilising 100% Dyneema PF FIbres, the CB2000 has absolutely zero stretch making it the ultimate line to lead around and of course play fish on. It is true that it can be a very knee trembling experience the first time you play a carp, but as you feel every twist and turn and hear the sing of the braid in the wind you will be hard pushed to find a more electric and exciting means of playing a carp. I have been using the 30lb breaking strain variant and with a minimal line diameter of just 0.

The all-new improved matt black cosmetics make this one of the best looking reels I have seen for a while and, yes, it has the seamless performance we have come to expect from the brand that has produced some of the most iconic carp fishing reels around. Feature packed with X-Ship, Super Slow Oscillation 50 and Aero Wrap II, this is a steal at under £140. The instant multi-disc drag means the reel can go from free spool to locked up in just half a turn, allowing you to stay in tune with a fighting carp in an instant. Complete with an extra spool and four line reducers, you can effortlessly have two spools ready to go with different main lines and respective breaking strains.

A super item to help build up those all-important layers. Ideally worn over base layers, the Atlas fleece is part of the Navitas Interactive System, allowing it to be fastened to both the Navitas Scout jacket and Navitas Agent jacket to provide a fully protective winter jacket solution. A 100 per cent polyester construction makes a lightweight yet warm item boasting three external zip pockets, full-length zip and embroidered logo detail. THE TACKLE BOX’S LEE JACKSON SAYS: Spotted Fin is relatively new to the world of carp baits, and in the short time that it’s been around, its Catalyst range of boilies, pop-ups, wafters and pellets and suchlike have brought about excellent results wherever they have been used. Is it any wonder then that they enlisted the help of carp fishing legend Frank Warwick, whose expertise around a high-attract pop-up is second to none? The range comprises 12mm and 15mm pop-ups plus booster sprays to match and comes in five flavour combinations – Fruit Zing, Caramel Cream, Miracle Berry, Masala Spice and Classic Corn. Whether fished over a bed of free offerings, a single hook bait fished in isolation or used to tip off a bottom bait on a snowman rig or suchlike, these pop-ups give the ability to attract and catch carp on practically any water that they are used. LEE JACKSON’s VERDICT “Frank knows his stuff so worth a try for sure” 7/10 £4.
