Did you know that just about anybody can learn to fish? Fishing really is a four-season leisure pastime, and one of its joys is that in each season there are different and exciting fish to catch. Fishing transports you to the heart of nature and the many, intriguing plants and animals that live there. By attending an organised event this summer during the National Fishing Month Silver Jubilee, you could experience the joys of fishing yourself. Angling takes you into the fresh, unpolluted air, promoting healthy lung function and a sense of well-being.

It’s by no means a technical tip but by giving this topic some thought you might just earn yourself a few bonus carp. Now that spring has finally settled on our doorstep, it is clear to see that nature is well and truly waking up. The buds are cracking, the birds are chirping and, of course, the carp are a lot more active. It is at this time in their annual cycle that carp will begin to not only forage nature’s larders but they become a lot more acrobatic, leaping and throwing themselves from the water.

Solar Tackle fieldtester Peter Zyla has kicked off his spring season in style with this awesome 46lb 9oz common. Peter explains: "Outside the lovely, spring sunshine is shining, but this early in the season the water temperatures are still low. My target water is a shallow pit and so the weather affects the carp very quickly. Although the sun was shining, the temperatures were quite low for a few days, followed by a cold, easterly wind.

Targeting a pre-baited plateau for a day-only trip, Solar Tackle team member has landed this 40lb 10oz mirror. Having baited a clear, gravel plateau, which is 2m deep on top, at 120m from the bank with a mixture of particles and Candy Floss boilies soaked in Candy Floss Mega Big Shot Liquid, Thomas presented a 14mm Candy Floss pop-up over the area with a scattering of Candy Floss freebies. Three hours in to the session, one of the two rods placed on top of the plateau tore off. After a long, nail-biting fight, Thomas finally slipped the net under this lovely carp, which is his 12th carp over 40lb so far this year.

Regular TC blogger and all round nice guy, Matt Kingsford, has a crack at Manor Farm's popular lake known as Winters. . . After fishing Becks Lake at Manor Farm Fishery in Bedfordshire last week for the night I fancied going back and testing my wits on one of the more challenging lakes on the complex, known to be more tricky are Winters Lake and Booneys after looking at the availability for the Friday my mind was made up with one space available on Winters.
