7 TOP TIPS If you’re thinking about sharpening your hooks then here are a few pointers to get you started. Do you like what I did there – hooks, pointers? Anyway… 1 THERE’S A TIME AND A PLACE Okay, so it’s all the rage with big-fish anglers, but the first thing we have to ask ourselves is whether sharpening your hooks is really necessary? The guys who spend limitless hours honing every single hook point with near-surgical precision are invariably those who are chasing one life-changing bite and, so, it’s one of those percentage points that they are using in their favour. It makes perfect sense, right? Of course it does, as they can take no risks when it comes to that fish of a lifetime. But what about anglers like you and I, fishing more highly stocked waters, especially at this time of year, in search of a bite or five in a few hours? Is sharpening our hooks, only to have to change them after every fish or even slightly wayward cast, really worth it? Well, not at around £5 per packet it probably isn’t.

Angling is still searching for its position in the mainstream sports arenas. Although it is a participatory sport, hugely popular on a world-wide basis and practised in virtually every country, general acceptance by those that follow sports is largely absent. There are no Olympic angling medals at stake in Rio. There are a variety of reasons why this is the case, most of them related to a lack of understanding about the sport and what makes anglers ‘tick’.

Having previously fished at Farlow's and caught a few nice carp, I'd been planning to get back down for a while but with other sessions taking place it had been a couple of weeks since my last visit. Unfortunately it hadn't gone to plan as I had been able to get amongst the carp. On that session I arrived at the gates and having a walk round lake one and lake two, both lakes were very busy. It appears to be a popular venue and with it recently having the new edition of The Erics Angling Tackle Shop on site it seems busier than ever.

It’s surface fishing time and our editor shares a great tip to help you feed mixers and floating pellets beyond usual catapult range… They’re light, so they don’t go particularly far when you catapult them out – surface baits are not the easiest to bait with at any kind of range. You can spod them, but that creates disturbance and attracts every gull, duck and coot in the county. So how do you get round this problem? The answer is pretty simple and it was something I first saw when out shooting a feature with Terry Hearn about 12 years ago! You’ll need some stocking-type PVA, your floaters and a few dry stones. It’s important that they are dry and they need to be about walnut size or a little smaller, but try and find heavy ones.

Solar Tackle field tester Soren Poulsen has landed his long-chased target fish, and what an impressive carp it is. This impressive Danish mirror is not only Soren's target fish, but his first Danish forty and a new lake record to boot. Soren explains: “For several years I have been chasing a special fish in one of our large lakes. The lake holds a low stock, but covers an area of approximately 320 acres.

Hitting the banks of the Waesmere syndicate on Friday, Solar Tackle team member Wesley Lagaert managed 4 bites in under 24-hours, the biggest fishing being an old mirror that tipped the scales at 33lb 6oz. “I had 4 bites from Friday night until Saturday morning,” explains Wes. “So, there wasn’t much sleep involved! I lost a small one at the net and, frustratingly, lost a real good ‘un shortly after due to a very odd occurrence. “Things picked up after that though and I landed a 28lb 10oz common and then a really old mirror of 33lb 6oz.

Following on from the popularity of the Cell, Mainline has answered back with the all-encompassing Essential Cell. Not to be thought of as a fishmeal or bird food, this is highly nutritional bait incorporating a mix of crucial dietary ingredients and food sources that carp find much easier to process and convert into energy. However, we understand that it can often take a lot to change from boilies that you have confidence in, so why not try one of the accompanying products, such as the Stick Mix Liquid. The PVA-friendly formula incorporates the highly visual yellow colouring with a mouth-wateringly good fruity aroma.

So we have all heard about how useful yardsticks can be and it seems very widely accepted terminology to explain how far a certain spot is: “12 wraps to the pylon mate. ” Going one step further, Avid Carp is proud to offer the glow-in-the-dark variety, making it even easier to get your rods back out on the same mark whether it’s 1am or 1pm. Simply wrap around the subtle green tips and away you go. Supplied with a 12ft cord, you can always gauge a rod length with ease and the three separate and different coloured toggles allow you to clearly mark each rod’s distance for increased accuracy.
