Terminal Tackle

It’s been a long time coming, but the eagerly anticipated COG (Centre Of Gravity) lead system is finally here and I reckon it looks a winner.

The unique system, which features some extra components and a recess in the top of the lead itself,offers the hooking potential of an inline lead but with the ejection qualities of a lead-clip arrangement.

I can’t remember the last time I used a lead clip as, many moons ago, I ran some tests on various lead setups and found the lead clip to be the absolute worst in terms of hooking and bite indication. Okay, it drops the lead efficiently, but in all other areas I just don’t rate a lead clip at all. Also, how many times I ever really have to drop the lead can be counted without the use of too many fingers!

So, what does it comprise? Well, from the lead-clip swivel there is a length of leadcore sheath (no lead inside it) with a swivel spliced to the end.This second swivel only has one eye and it is the resulting barrel that pushes into a rubber grommet in the top of the lead. There’s a Kwik Link attached to this swivel, which is obviously where your hook link goes.

That may all sound a little complicated, but fear not as the kits come complete and ready- to-go. There are also two versions, namely a distance and a flat, the latter offering leads up to 8oz for placing baits or when using boats or bait boats.

I reckon the flat ones would be awesome inside a solid PVA bag, which I’ll be finding out over coming weeks and months. I’m also curious as to how it might work with a short pop-up rig above the lead,offering the immediate impact for hooking but allowing the lead to drop off if the fish shakes its head to rid itself of the rig.

So, a versatile system, but one that entails far more components than, say, a drop-off inline setup. It’s well worth a try though. (MC)
