As is usual with me it’s been quite a hectic couple of weeks, what with family, work and shows. Nevertheless, I’ve still managed a couple of nights on my winter venue testing a new all-season bait for Sticky. Like anything in life, it’s rewarding being part of something where you have a lot of input, seeing it evolve, grow and eventually come to fruition and everyone can benefit from something you have helped put together. The next batch of all-season bait turned up on my doorstep and, as you can imagine, I was as excited by what beheld me in the box and, more importantly, how I would juggle my increasingly busy life to be able to get out and do some fishing for a change.

Angler comes back to carp fishing with a bang following 36month break. Berkshire angler Paul Smith proved that you never lose the passion for banking big carp, after landing this lovely 36lb 8oz common following a three-year break from fishing in the UK. Paul hadn’t cast a line in for 36months, aside from a trip to France last year, but after joining a Newbury club water his first session yielded the fish in under 2hours. Spodding out a bed of Hinders betaken, chilli hemp oil and maggots at 20yards, Paul fished single 14mm Squidz bottom baits tipped with artificial maggots over the top.

With Christmas safely negotiated, and just a load of bills to show for it, thoughts inevitably turn back to fishing once we’re into the New Year. I like a round of golf or two in the warmer months, but winter is about carp fishing, especially given the quiet banks. I’d been on a bit of a roll through November and December, but January was to prove altogether more difficult, if no less eventful. .
