Question: A few waters near me have boilie and nut bans, so I am curious as to what baits you would use on these venues? Jason Ellis, via www. totalcarpmagazine. com Marc Coulson says: Bait bans are a bugbear of mine because they usually stem from the fishery owner being misinformed at some stage and, subsequently, making a knee-jerk reaction to the detriment of his anglers and even the fish in the lake. Boilies are the most nutritious carp bait used on a regular basis and such a ban will often stunt the fish’s growth potential.

Question: I have started fishing a lake with very clear water so I”m going to use fluorocarbon. I’ve been told that you should only use certain hook patterns with this material. Can you tell me if this is true? Alex Selwood, via www. totalcarpmagazine.

Question: Does anybody use par-boiled potatoes these days? If not, why not? If so, what’s the best way to present them? Albert Maclaren, via www. totalcarpmagazine. com Marc Coulson says: Erm, the simple answer there is no, I do not know of anybody who uses potatoes. To be fair, the main reason for this is that there are far more effective baits available these days.

Question: When fishing my lake I like to keep my lines pinned down with the use of back leads. However, what can I do to keep my line out of harm’s way when fishing the margins and close in? Ollie Hobson, via www. totalcarpmagazine. com Marc Coulson says: Like you, I love to fish the margins, especially in summer when the carp frequent the close-in spots on a regular basis.

Popular tackle shop denies rumors spread about its closure. A Cheshire tackle shop plagued by rumors of its imminent closure has taken moves to quash the unfounded gossip. Contacting Total Carp to put the stories to bed, Stapeley Angling and Outdoor Centre has revealed that, despite rumors to the contrary, it is NOT closing down and is in fact looking to the future with new stock and more online activity. “The angling centre is half of the business here, the other part being a garden centre that had to be closed late last year, which is where we believe the rumors started,” tackle shop manager Neil Stockton told us.

Custom boilie scores with a big commercial water mirror. A secret recipe boilie was at the heart of a great winter session for one angler after the bait proved the downfall of this beautifully scaled 30lb mirror. Caught from Kent’s Elphicks Fisheries, the stunning specimen was banked by angler Paul Andrassy during a 24hour session that also saw him net a common of 22lb. Targeting the residents of the complex’s Plantation lake, Paul’s secret weapon was a special custom boilie mix of a winterized amino base mix with crushed hemp and an assortment of ‘confidential’ flavors.

Just as Leon Bartropp thought spring was around the corner, nature kicked him in the teeth and a massive cold front came in with snow, wind and sleet. It’s been that bad that most lakes have completely frozen over the last couple of weeks. We even endured temperatures of minus 12ºC on one of those nights! However, it’s not all doom and gloom and every cloud has a silver lining. I may not have been able to get out there on the bank but there is plenty that I have preoccupied myself with in between work and family commitments.

Southern fishery developed into top quality runs water with a few surprises. A hugely popular Dorset venue has revealed plans to give one of its waters a massive make-over. Todber Manor has given Total Carp details of its plans to overhaul the complex’s Wadmill Lake, with massively improved pegs, new fish, an increased average size of carp and one very special target specimen. “Wadmill has been left to its own devices for a while now so we wanted to work on it to produce a great runs water for our anglers,” Todber’s Mark Brown told TC.

Meticulous feeding delivers near 40lb deep winter mirror. It’s not just in the balmy temperatures of summer that prebaiting can pay dividends – as this chunky 39lb 14oz mirror more than goes to show. Bristol angler Mark Drake feed a spot in the reedy margins of a south west lake for four weeks before casting his rigs. Targeting a small bay Mark waited until conditions were perfect before he tested his swim, casting out a Perfection Groundbait’s Choc Orange nut boilie over a bed of free offerings.
