What a way to kick off 2017! Solar Tackle boss Martin Locke has just returned from his first session of the new year and, despite sub-zero temperatures, still landed 5 carp including 3 over 40lb and a session biggest of 58lb. It was all thanks to a bit of an ‘old-school’ approach as Martin explains: “Just back from my annual January outing to Rainbow… great trip to get back in the swing of things after Christmas. Not least for the fact that the already enormous fish are even bigger at this time of year and in tip top condition, but also getting together with the ‘hardcore’ winter anglers always makes it an eagerly awaited trip. “Once again, myself,John Hannentand ‘Darren the Pond’ set off to a somewhat chilly lake on which the thermometer read -10°C.

With carp care being paramount, fish care should always be at the top of any anglers list. The Quick Matt is a great example of fish care. Simple to set up, it has the main body which is a pop up frame that comes in a water proof carryall ideal for keeping all your other fishing gear dry. Once the frame is removed from the carryall it simply pops open and you can then insert the 2” foam base, this padded base offers protection for even the liveliest of carp.

A key part of fishing is fishing accurately. Whether it's making sure that a rig lands out on the same spot time after time or bait application using a spod or marker float lands in the right area. The NGT Distance sticks make this possible. By placing the two distance sticks 12ft apart with the cord that comes in the case, you can accurately clip your rods up to the distance required and hit the same spot time after time.

Tips And Tactics Northern maestro JIMMY HIBBARD looks to keep the bites coming this winter. A few minor alterations as the temperatures slowly drop and it’s game on! Time spent watching is essential to success For me, carp fishing is an all-year-round passion. I find the colder months some of the most enjoyable. The cooler days and longer nights mean that temperatures rarely exceed double figures, but that doesn’t mean the fish won’t be up for a feed.

Tip Of The Month Although this tip may seem a bit simple, it still astounds me the amount of anglers that we meet on the bank who are yet to carry a selection of bait colours. Now that is fine when the fish are feeding heavily on bait, but when bites are hard to come by I think it is the simplest way to adapt your approach. It is not ground-breaking, yet it does make a difference. Whether you opt for artificial baits such as foam, plastic baits or prefer traditional hook baits such as a boilies, corn or even bread, the pulling power of a bright bait cannot go unnoticed.

7 TIPS FOR YOUR BEST WINTER YET Consistent carp catcher CRAIG MORTIMER reveals his seven top tips that help him maintain his form through the toughest season of them all.
