Angler's fears realised as officials reveal apex predator is present in all areas of the country. The angling community experienced a collective shudder this week following official confirmation that otters are now present in every single county of England. Last year a wildlife survey published by the Environment Agency revealed that the species could be found in all areas if the country apart from Kent. However, the EA have now confirmed sightings of the predatory mammal along with holts on both Kent’s river Medway and Eden.

Police hand out advice to anglers to combat latest wave of tackle robberies. Following a spate of tackle thefts across the country one of the UK's busiest day-ticket carp waters has taken steps to educate anglers in protecting their kit. The staff at Oxfordshire’s Richworth Linear Fisheries, which has suffered from a number of thefts in recent months, have joined forces with Thames Valley Police to provide advice on such areas as micro-dotting tackle, as well as the basics on preventing the theft of valuable items in the first place. Although already operating tight security with patrols running on-site throughout the night, Linear’s head bailiff Roy Parsons told Total Carp he’s pleased to see the police at the venue giving anglers the advice they need to make sure their tackle is as safe as it can be.

Winter can be dark and gloomy at the best of times, so we decided to team up with market leader, COAST, to bring you the best in LED-lighting products to light up your campaigns. Headtorches are the number-one source of light when you’re out on the bank and there are two models in this giveaway. The smaller of the two is the HL27, offering a large 309-lumen output, and is perfect for close-quarter and distance work; even capable of illuminating targets up to 122 metres away. The much larger HL8 is Coast’s most powerful headtorch, giving off an amazing 344 lumens, and when run on the more than functional power energy setting has an incredible run time of over 79 hours.

This week I’ve been out on the bank fairly regularly, but about half the time has been spent wetting a line, other than my marker rod. I’m undertaking a season long campaign on one of my local rivers so a lot of time has been spent rambo’ing about looking for carp, interrogating the seemingly tight lipped pleasure anglers, finding spots, and probably most importantly for this type of fishing, baiting them up. The rower’s certainly aren’t helping, they’re a bit of a nuisance, and some appear intent on being extremely ignorant and rude towards anglers, but at least they all go in at night. On the plus side it’s all coming together nicely so I’m confident I’ll get a result soon.
