The selection process was a long, hard, affair and the only way to choose our future team fairly was to hold some trials. This gave several of the UK’s best carp-match anglers the chance to shine and gain a seat on the prestigious plane to Romania. We asked Ian; why did you have trials? Those that have been to the World Championships before obviously have experience and a head-start.

74lb Belgian Common BankedBelgian-based Geert Ooms has landed one of the most sought-after big carp on the Continent. He landed the huge common known as the Big One at 74lb on the second night of a three-day session at a huge sand pit, which is connected to a 60-mile canalstretch of canal in northern Belgium. This is the second time that this fish has graced Geert’s landing net in 10 months, having landed it in December 2011 at record weight of 85lb, which still holds the title as the Benelux record common. The 34-year-old prebaited with 12kg of Solar Tackle’s Club mix boilies and fished Club Mix hook baits over the top, which is the same bait and tactics Geert used to take the ‘Big One’ at it’s record weight back in December.

Break on club water yields 23lb common for JackTaska consultant Jack Cobb was delighted when a trip to his local syndicate water yielded one of the lakes larger common carp. He explained: “I decided to have a week away from my usual syndicate lake due to my two main target fish being caught, so I thought I'd give a local club water a go, having done reasonably well on the lake in the past. I turned up at the lake at first light and found a nice south westerly wind pushing towards an out of bounds bank. I decided to sit on the point of an island, and fish long towards an over hanging willow on the out of bounds bank, you can walk round that bank and bait up but I decided to bait up with my trusty throwing stick from my swim, to keep disturbance to a minimum.

Gareth Evans lands a 33lb carp on barbel gear! After a desperate spell on the river, Gareth Evans was beginning to think that his newly bought barbel rods were never going to get a workout- so he decided to take them to his local carp water instead! The 33 year old construction advisor hoped for a double figure fish to give them a workout, but was delighted when something much bigger found its way to his net! He explained: “ My session didn’t get off to the best of starts- I'd forgotten to bring my food bag so got set up and headed to the Chinese for a bit of grub. To make matters worse, I suffered a flat tyre on the way there, which meant I didn't get back to the lake until well after dark. I was in a right mood, and sat chomping on my No66 with the cob on!Having let off some steam, I managed to get the rods out, which were thankfully already clipped up to a silty area on the side of a weedbed at approx 70 yards range. Two rods out, and a dozen or so spods of feed later, I was fishing! Between 2.

Award winning project leader slams inaccurate Angling Trust email. Les Webber MBE, founder of the award winning Angling Projects scheme, has refuted suggestions that the project is to close at the end of the year, as suggested in an email to patrons by Angling Trust Chairman, Mike Heylin. The project, that was this year given the Queens Award for services to angling, provides a centre for schools to bring groups of children to learn about fishing, as an alternative to drugs and crime. He told Angling News Week: “I can categorically say that the centre will not be closing down, nor will it be forming a charity that will be run by the Patrons, as Mike Heylin suggested.
