For a very long time now I, and I’m sure many, many others, have played around with various ways of trying to eject the lead when using a helicopter rig. The problem has always been that to secure the lead on the cast, but then be able to eject it when needed, has not been an easy thing to achieve. The key there is ‘when needed’ because there have been a few systems created but mostly they dump the lead on every retrieve – a massive bugbear of mine. However, Korda has come up with a virtually foolproof system that does exactly what you need it to and you can switch from retaining the lead to dropping it very easily.

Having listened to one of my colleagues, Karl Jenkinson, say how good the Atom is that he owns, it was with no little sense of anticipation that I took this one out to my local club lake to put it through its paces. The first thing that is blatantly obvious is just how tiny the Atom is when packed away – I’ve seen bigger retention sling bags! I know this might sound an obvious statement given the Atom concept, but I was literally amazed at how tiny it was. This amazement continued once the Atom was erected, which, by the way, literally takes seconds. It is, well, tiny.

If you spend this duration in other waders then you begin to sweat and when you take them off you would think there’s a leak, well no more. Having studied fisheries management at both college and uni, I have spent many an hour in waders, from heavy-duty ones with steel boots to the more lightweight PVC variety. When I received a message from Chris at Vass telling me about the new 305 breathable waders, I was a little sceptical that they would be bringing to the market an item that would be measurably different from the rest. That was until I wore them, and wow!I was ignorant to the concept of something being waterproof and breathable, but having worn these for over six hours at a time I know exactly what it means.

Designed to be used as a long-range tool, the Affinity features two, long, tapered, forged-aluminium spools and a slow oscillation to ensure line lay is neat and efficient, helping to gain those vital extra yards. Penn is a name held in high regard where fishing reels are concerned, but more so in sea angling than carp. However, we are sure that’s all set to change. Stainless ball bearings make for a smooth action, even when cranking a lead back, and the carbon matrix front drag means you’re only a click away from staying in control of your quarry in the heat of battle.

Brand new this month, we see two intriguing liquids hit the shelves in the shape of the Tuna L030, which is better than the original L030, and Liquid Tuna Extract. Both these highly attractive, versatile liquids are PVA friendly, lending themselves to a variety of applications from inclusion in base mixes, PVA bags or, as Matt Jackson demonstrated on page 78, they are great at boosting your boilies straight from the bag. The thinner of the two is the Liquid Tuna Extract and it’s my favourite. The rich aroma smells like tuna straight from a can and I’m dying to give it a go.

Two products make up this range, the Salted Mega Mix and Salted Mini Mix. The Mega Mix includes mini tiger nuts, chickpeas, Canadian maple peas and both ruby and popcorn maize, as opposed to the finer blend of tares, black rapeseed, red and white dari, sunflower hearts, red and white millet and the best-quality hemp found in the Mini Mix. The small items within the mix make it brilliant for introducing onto spots you want to get clear, for example in weed beds and the like. Both mixes are supplied in 2.

Sometimes the simplest designs can be the best and, in the case of this barrow, especially if you’re a day-only angler, this is bang on. My mate asked me why you’d ever use a barrow on a day session? I was like: “You’re kidding, right?” It makes perfect sense to fish off a barrow and be in a position to move what little gear you have quickly and without fuss. In which case, a barrow of this kind of size is perfect. Easy to set up and with adjustable front bars and undercarriage bag, this is absolutely spot-on and Korum has hit its intended market perfectly.
