As the name suggests these are extremely lightweight – 350g to be precise. For boots claiminging to offer insulating protection down to minus 30°C this is really impressive. Because the thermal liner is completely removable these are also sturdy EVA rubber Wellington-type boots for use all year round. Ideal for when you are wading through puddles and margins the ingenious design means they will float should they come off and with a useful rear kick-off plate they are easy to take off without the need for grabbing your boots and getting covered in mud.

Stick mixes and liquids are among the best forms of baits to use at this time of year – maximum smell and attraction but limited feed to fill the carp up; you want them to look, but pick up your hook bait in a competitive feeding scenario. Available in a range of sweet and savoury/fishy flavours, Bait Aktivator is the perfect liquid to boost pellets, boilies and particles or to add a cloudy element to spod mixes. Stickmix is ready to use straight from the bag and with an almost moist texture you can form neat little parcels of attractive feed around your hook bait in an instant, with the use of some PVA mesh. I would also like to try and mix it with a few of the liquids to see if it’s possible to make a Method groundbait mix that will explode, releasing various effective attractors throughout your swim.

This tough and sturdy stove is a great addition to any angler’s tackle; with it being so compact and lightweight it takes up almost no space. Due to its foldaway body I tend to keep mine inside the casing and it fits nicely inside the main body of my kettle, along with my brew kit. Because the Turbo Lite stove has a piezoelectric starting system it means there is no need to rummage around looking for a lighter, so you can get the kettle on and enjoy a brew while sat behind the rods. .

What a way to kick off 2017! Solar Tackle boss Martin Locke has just returned from his first session of the new year and, despite sub-zero temperatures, still landed 5 carp including 3 over 40lb and a session biggest of 58lb. It was all thanks to a bit of an ‘old-school’ approach as Martin explains: “Just back from my annual January outing to Rainbow… great trip to get back in the swing of things after Christmas. Not least for the fact that the already enormous fish are even bigger at this time of year and in tip top condition, but also getting together with the ‘hardcore’ winter anglers always makes it an eagerly awaited trip. “Once again, myself,John Hannentand ‘Darren the Pond’ set off to a somewhat chilly lake on which the thermometer read -10°C.

With carp care being paramount, fish care should always be at the top of any anglers list. The Quick Matt is a great example of fish care. Simple to set up, it has the main body which is a pop up frame that comes in a water proof carryall ideal for keeping all your other fishing gear dry. Once the frame is removed from the carryall it simply pops open and you can then insert the 2” foam base, this padded base offers protection for even the liveliest of carp.
