From Dusk ‘Til Dawn
A busy work and family life, combined with a burning passion for carp fishing, Duncan Arrandale believes that you should make the most of the hours of darkness while on the bank.
I’ve been a carp angler for more years than I care to admit to, and one thing that I think is hugely underutilised are the hours of darkness. This is obviously exaggerated in the winter months, but even in the warmer months where it stays light until 8pm and onwards I see time and time again that people do not make the most of their time on the bank during these periods. The lake is often quieter, the surrounding roads will become quieter too, and there are many things to exploit during this time.
Make Your Own Luck
Mr consistentJACK FUNNELLruns us through how he catches carp wherever he goes, the rules he sticks to and the edges that he uses to guarantee success.
The guys at Total Carp asked me to run through the thinking and tactics I employ that often lead to me banking a number of fish from varying venues around the UK, and how a particular mind-set can also help you too. With this said, it is hard to single out just one particular thing or reveal a certain edge; not because I am a secret squirrel, but because I don’t really know what it is that I do that would be considered different from the norm.
I don’t really pay too much attention to others, but seeing how much information there is on the internet, it would surprise me if most anglers didn’t understand the basics of carp fishing.
In this month’s instalment, Ian talks to us about how he attacks a night carp fishing session and how you can do it safely and efficiently.
After speaking with Deputy Editor Dan Murrell about this feature and our planned night time escapade I was immediately looking forward to a night on the bank, after all it is one of the major bonuses of being a carp angler, being able to use the often neglected hours of darkness to help up your catch rate and most of all expand your carp fishing experience.
Dan wanted to know if my carping approach changed at all, the tactics, baits and techniques I apply in the day, do they still work at night or do I have to change my plan of attack.
Well in a nutshell no, my rigs bait and tactics are to catch carp and this doesn’t change if the sun is bright in the sky or the moon is on the horizon, after all, do your feeding habits or senses change? Because from my experiences the carp certainly don't.
Tip Of The Month
For those of you with a keen eye and a good memory, you will remember that I covered how to utilise any old bait you may have laying around before.
Last time we simply took the hook baits and stuck them in a blender creating a highly effective multi-coloured mix that drifts seamlessly through the water column creating clouds of attraction. This time, however, we want to get a little more body to the mix so that it can be utilised on the bottom just as effectively as it is throughout the upper layers.
Starting with the old hook baits, these can be wafters, pop-ups or even hard hookers.

Dave Magalhaes is one of the best floater fishing anglers around and he reveals how he goes about fishing for carp off the top.
Nowadays I am not blessed with much time. It can be as little as an afternoon or an evenings fishing. In the colder months this can be really tough but now it’s lovely and warm, it’s possible to get a bend in the rod with just a few hours at your mercy.
We catch up with young gun JACK FUNNEL, who has been on fire of late, and ask him what to focus on in a bid to bank more carp this June.
1. Check The Snags
When it warms up, the fish will be spending lots of time in the shaded and safe areas. They won’t be there all the time but it is certainly worth checking them out.
Tom Makerexplains how to make your money go further when it comes to bait, revealing top little edges to help you spend less and catch more….
One of the most frequent questions that I get asked is how to get around the price of bait. The subject is a tricky one because I do feel that it is one element of carp fishing that should never be compromised or taken lightly.
Bait is so important and is a key part to catching lots of fish, and regularly too.
