This new version of the classic Sherpa from Trakker is a little lighter than the original, but still boasts the thick-pill fleece outer and lined inner. The loss in weight makes it more comfortable and I would say it contributes to it not quite being as warm as its predecessor, but it’s still a great fleece jacket for the colder months. I also like the additional pocket on the arm; perfect for a phone. Marc CoulsonRRP: £59.

Although I tend to tie my rigs on the bank, to suit the situation that I’m faced with, I do store several dozen short, braided, PVA-bag rigs in a couple of these Rig Safes. Offering infinitely more protection than a traditional rig wallet, the Rig Safe has become extremely popular – and for good reason. There is room inside for plenty of rigs and the three compartments are handy for keeping little terminal bits in. I know loads of people who use one, and a few who should.

This low-visibility, supple line boasts great strength for its diameter and, as such, makes a great line for use with zig rigs. I’ve used Pro Clear on and off for many years. It’s a classic that continues to perform, but only more recently have I used it for zig fishing, having been recommended it by Ian Russell and Iain Macmillan. So far I think they’re both right – it’s perfect.

This unhooking mat offers three distinct features, namely its fabulous all-round protection of the fish while unhooking; ease of use when taking fish back to the lake and slipping them back without fuss and, finally, thanks to its foldaway design it’s also very easy to transport and store. The last point is particularly poignant because many of these cradle-style mats prove very bulky on the barrow. Pete McKennaRRP: £57. 99Website: www.

There are a handful of companies that produce genuinely top-end rods, and Free Spirit is definitely one of them. The Hi-S is widely admired and is regarded as one of the very best rods on the market. I’ve used variations for a long time, but last year acquired some 12ft 6in 3. 25lb versions for testing – a combination that has long been my favoured all-round choice.
