European Reports Highlight Scale of Cormorant Impact on Fish. The Angling Trust is highlighting two reports from Europe that show that numbers of cormorants across Europe are their highest for 150 years. The studies further strengthen the case for action to be taken to protect fish stocks in the UK from unsustainable predation by cormorants. The first report was commissioned by the European Parliament's Fisheries Committee from Professor Ian Cowx of Hull University's acclaimed Fisheries Institute and the other is the European Commission's clarification on derogation under the Birds Directive which provides important information to support any moves by the UK Government to open up the current inadequate licensing system for controlling cormorant numbers.

Exciting news, videos and more inside! With massive fish banked, and prestigious festivals won with big nets of carp, you could be forgiven for thinking that we are are in the midst of a spring heatwave, rather than the Siberia like conditions that we are actually faced with!We have the story from Cornwall's White Acres complex, where James Hawkins has been crowned Bait Tech Festival champion. Then, there is the tale of specimen ace Paul Garner, who has landed a 19lb zander from the River Severn. The Angling Trust's battle against fishery destroying cormorants has reached new heights this week, with Martin Salter presenting the campaign to parliament. On top of this, we have the story of the massive River Po catfish, that stretched the scales to over 220kg! Then, there is the good news regarding the 'Take A Friend Fishing' campaign, that is set to run again this year.

Easter campaign organised by the ATA!The TAKE A FRIEND FISHING campaign, organised and run by the Angling Trades Association, is back to encourage parents, grandparents and friends to take the time over the Easter break to give family members and friends the chance to have a go at fishing. Remember when a friend or family member took you fishing when you were young or just starting out? We bet everyone has experienced a memorable session or two like that – sharing the bank with someone else is always more fun! And with the Take A Friend Fishing campaign, there is the chance to take someone for FREE. Jeremy Wade, author, TV presenter of River Monsters and Angling Trust Ambassador said: ‘The Take a Friend Fishing (TAFF) campaign is a great way for people to learn the angling basics and appreciate the outdoors. By introducing newcomers to the sport, you pass on a gift that stays with them throughout their lives, taking them to beautiful places to catch exciting fish.

Stark warning from Angling Trust. Following complaints from anglers angered by the re-emergence of a website offering rod licence renewals which charges an additional £11 for ‘processing services’ the Angling Trust is warning anglers not to pay a penny more than they need and is encouraging everyone to use the completely free service provided by the Environment Agency and the Post Office. Buried away in the small print at www. rodlicence.

Since having a few samples of these to test, I have the distinct feeling that I am going to be spending some serious money on them. I’d seen loads of top anglers using these baits, so I decided that I had to give them a try. My only regret now is that I didn’t do so years ago. They are superb in every sense.

On the rare occasions that I fish a chod rig I prefer to do so ‘naked’ style, without a leadcore leader. These kits allow quick and easy construction of naked chods and, so far, they appear to be super-safe as well. They’re also very neat and unobtrusive on the bottom. The only downside is that a couple of the individual components are not easy to reuse and even with smaller pop-ups I do still have to add some putty to the rig’s swivel.

Fox has returned to the larger head style of its top-end alarms, with the NTXr at the top of the tree and this, the NXr sitting just beneath it. As far as I can tell, the main difference is that the NXr only comes with a blue LED option and an ever-so-slightly lower spec. So far the NXr has performed brilliantly and I am hugely impressed with the sensitivity in particular. I dreamed, as a youngster, of owning a set of the legendary RX Digitals and, while the head size may be a little large for some people’s liking, these remind of those heady days.
