Midlands carp ace LAWRENCE EAST has been enjoying plenty of success using zigs on his local water. Here are a baker’s dozen of ways you can too.
Despite their appearance in plenty of magazine features, DVDs and YouTube videos, zigs still remain a hugely underused tactic. Some people are a little scared of them – as with a lot of things beyond ‘the norm’ – whereas some purists purposely ignore them in favour of more traditional tactics.
Exclusive First Look!
I remember when Trakker launched these for the awesome Pioneer a good few years back, and now the Yorkshire-based bivvy market leader is doing likewise for the hugely successful Tempest. This is music to my ears, being a Tempest brolly user, and I can’t wait for them to actually hit the shelves of Trakker stockists.
Available in different sizes to fit the brolly, V2, Air and two-man, they are simple to attach via three small poles that fit straight into the front poles of the shelter itself. The material then just clips to the other poles around the respective Tempest and that’s it.
The Tackle Box’s Lee Jackson says: I’m always interested when a new range of hooks comes onto the market, although generally a bit disappointed when they resemble patterns that are already available.
These hooks are quite a lot different from the norm, however, and are made in the US using surgically sharpening technology. This technology creates a precision-ground, triple-sided point that penetrates with very little pressure, therefore hopefully converting more enquiries into bites. There are something like five patterns in the range, but the ones we have chosen to stock are what we consider are going to be the most popular, the Magnum Wide Gape, Magnum Curved Shank and Magnum Chod, all of which are available in the most popular carp hook sizes.
If you’re after a chair that takes comfort even further, albeit with some additional bulk and weight, then the next in the R range is, unsurprisingly, the R3. Again boasting all of the features of the others (there’s a pattern forming here) but with an altogether larger design, this is more of a full-on chair rather than guest chair. The full-height back boasts extra padding in the headrest, to make this the outstanding choice if just comfort alone is your preference. (MC)

HOT OFF THE PRESS!
Again boasting most of the R1’s features, including camou trim, cam wheel, adjustable legs but this time with additional neoprene-covered armrests for even more comfort. If you have never owned or tried a chair with arms then you really don’t know what you’re missing. Just this simple addition transforms a chair’s comfort levels and can make it worth the extra investment, albeit there is obviously a little added weight. The back is slightly higher than the R1, creating a hybrid chair that might be the answer to lots of carp anglers’ prayers.
FOX R-SERIES CAMOU CHAIR R1
These chairs have been introduced following the huge success of the R Series Camou bedchairs and they begin with the R1. A high-density foam mattress with micro-fleece cover offers comfort and warmth, with extra padding in the top section of the back for added luxury. The four legs are individually adjustable and feature large, swivelling mudfeet for uneven ground. The leg-lock frame offers increased security, while the angle of the rear is adjusted via a cam wheel, offering multiple angles of lean.
Mainline needs no introduction as one of the biggest players in the game and the Balanced Wafters are another product that I believe will stand the test of time, and find a home in many anglers’ bait bucket. Even if you don’t use the boilie ranges, there’s certainly a benefit from having a tub or two because you simply can’t question the quality and proven flavour profiles.
The undisputed Cell, Hybrid and now the newer combination of the Essential Cell are now available in 12mm, 15mm and 18mm, allowing you to fish them as singles, as part of a snowman, or a cheeky 12mm nestled in a solid PVA bag. Other flavours are also in the range, such as Salty Squid, Peaches & Cream, Essential IB, Aromatic Fish, Banoffee, Spicy Crab, High Leakage Pineapple and Diamond Whites.
