I first saw the original HQ when out on features with Avid-backed Ian Russell and, initially, didn’t pay it too much attention. I’ve seen a million and one bivvies so I don’t always notice individual ones at first. However, over time, I grew to be pretty impressed with the ‘twin-skin’ design. This isn’t twin skin as in having a wrap attached; no, it’s what you might call a traditional construction but with an added (it’s removable) fabric inner lining.

I’m sure any angler would agree that when it comes to weighing your prize catch you want a reliable set of scales to ensure the highest level of accuracy. I have used Reuben scales for as long as I can remember. Starting off with the entry-level Flyweight Mk2 scales, I have worked my way up to the Specimen Hunter Classic. Brought back into production in 2011, this model boasts the original dial configuration and beta light pointer illumination of the 1988 model.

When we heard that the team at Shimano had a new big pit on the market, you can imagine our excitement. Having developed some of the best carp fishing reels over the years, we automatically set the bar high and this new launch has certainly lived up to our expectations. As soon as we opened the box the improved matt black cosmetics stuck out; this timeless finish will be a great addition to any existing setup and is sure to be a firm favourite among the ‘cult anglers’. Moving onto the reel itself, the instant drag is simply a joy to use.

A friend who I carp fish with, and who is as fussy as me when it comes to mono lines, has been using this for a little while and absolutely loves it. So, when it came to reviewing it here, I was keen to find out for myself what it was all about. Another ringing endorsement was that when I spoke to Gardner, I was told that the 15lb had, at the time, completely sold out! Fortunately, we already had a spool in the office. On the rods, the line behaves perfectly, sinking really well, casting as well as you’d expect from a 15lb line and feeling a lot less stretchy than some.

Imagine being able to use a set of rods from the famed DF stable, but not having to take out a second mortgage to do so. WOW! PROS - GREAT RODS FOR THE MONEY CONS - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! In fact, forget that. Not only do you not need to take out such a loan, in the Mission DF, Daiwa has created a rod that falls well into the budget category. I don’t like that word, budget, because it creates an image of something of substandard quality, but that is so not the case with the Mission DF.

I first saw these on a trip up to Trakker and was struck by them. They weren’t launched then, but have been now, and they’re well worth checking out. Available in three sizes, each boasts a sturdy construction, webbed carry loop and internal Velcro dividers, which, especially in the two larger sizes, can be moved around to suit your needs. What makes these different, however, is the clear lids and end section.

It’s been a little while since I was this excited about a product launch, but finally, after a couple of years of testing, the new ESP reel is here. I’ve seen a little bit of the progress of the Onyx because when out on features with ESP-backed TC contributor Kev Hewitt, he’s been using several prototypes. In fact, I remember being on one particular shoot when he actually had three different reels on his banksticks at once, such was ESP’s desire to make sure they were absolutely spot-on. The result is a reel specifically designed by carp anglers for use in carp fishing – unlike a fair few big-pit reels that hail from the sea/spinning market.

Daiwa is undoubtedly best known for its top-end rods and reels, but there is so much more to the brand than just the wallet-busting stuff, as you’ll see elsewhere in these pages with the Mission DF rods. The Emcast 5000A is another similar example, with a retail price of just £100. Just about every company that makes reels will tell you that the mid to lower-price range products feel like a reel costing twice as much. It’s not always true but in the case of this reel it has never been truer.

Following the popularity of the first release we were quick to see what changes had been made in the newer variations. The tap system has been revised and to make the containers more user friendly when in transit and storage the tap now screws on internally and can be simply screwed on top when you arrive at your swim or need to use the container. The tap also allows more control and results in a fluid water flow, ideal for helping to conserve water when on the bank for longer sessions. Constructed from durable HDPE, these containers are rugged and set to endure plenty of bankside abuse.
