Tip Of The Month
‘Edge’ Your Bets
People often associate the summer with fishing, not necessarily because it is the best time to catch them but more likely because it is among the most enjoyable times to be on the bank.
What’s important, though, is realising what is going on out in the pond. With the weed now in full swing, which can often make a venue feel a lot smaller, and with the water temperatures among the warmest they will reach, the carp can more often than not be found mooching in the edge.
Now is the time you should be in the edge too, whether that means walking around having a look and trying to stalk fish or simply sparing one of your three rods to cover a marginal area. Warm nights and bright mornings make it a great environment for feeding carp, and what’s more the bites can be out of this world, so get ready for some heart-stopping action.
Baits To Try
Pellets, hemp and crushed boilies are my go-to options; with plenty of scent for little food content carp can happily pick up a few morsels and keep coming back for more. Try to use dark baits to avoid waterfowl and also it’s a wise idea to look at water that’s three feet and deeper, so you are safely out of swan territory.
Rigs
A nice short supple hook link with a large inline lead is a great rig to lower down, and you know that once the carp has made a mistake there is no coming back from it. An inline lead gives a solid resistance and of course drops off on the take.
Also, having a flat or square-sided inline also allows you to lower your rig on a slanted marginal shelf, positioning your hook bait in the line the carp will take while safely leaving your leader and main line out of the way so as not to give away your presence.
