Surface Fishing

The warm weather has slowed the fishing right down on my syndicate water so I’ve been visiting a local day-ticket water for a bit of evening surface fishing.

It seems like a lifetime since I last got the mixers out and I’ve loved every minute of it. With soft rods, small reels and light line even the smallest of carp puts up a great fight. I’ve been surprised how good the fishing gets as the evening progresses. Last week I was catching carp up until I packed away at 11pm. It was pitch black and the carp were still slurping away at the mixers. Lots of anglers believe that they should fish on the bottom at night but, after witnessing this, I totally disagree. If they’ve been on the surface during the day, there’s a good chance they’ll still be there at night.

Check out this scaly mirror that was caught from the surface in the pitch black. It nearly ripped the rod out of my hand!
