Time is running out if you want to fish the 2014 World Carp Classic final – there are only a few places left! Held every year since 1998, this year the big event moves to Lake Bolsena, in Italy, from September 29th to October 5th. If you’d like to take part and represent the UK while competing against the best carp anglers in the world, you need to fish in the UK qualifying match, at the new Wraysbury 1, on July 24th to 27th. With a stock of around 50 originals and 350 hand-picked new fish, and recent captures to just under 50lb, this iconic fishery is definitely back on the map! There will be 20 double swims available to 40 anglers, covering the 45-acre lake. The cost of entry to the UK qualifier is £250 per pair with a maximum of four rods.
On Saturday, August 9th, 2014 Leamington Angling Association will be hosting a junior masterclass event at Jubilee Pools in Ryton-on-Dunsmore, near Coventry. It will be an easy-going, instructional event aimed at juniors up to 18 to encourage and help all skill levels – whether you’re looking to learn, polish or hone your skills, ranging from basic whip fishing to advanced rig mechanics and ‘big-fish rigs’, the aim is to cover all aspects, including fish and bank safety. There will be experts on hand, from various tackle companies such as Gardner, Mainline Korda and Dynamite Baits to name a few, all to help create a real-time classroom to teach different disciplines around the venue. Hopefully, there will even be the chance to land a few fish, providing the fish gods are smiling.
The introduction of a new technology that will dramatically cut the transfer of fish disease is the result of leading lights from British industry pulling together.
BSafe – short for 'bacteria safe' – began life in the mind of avid angler Derek Willan, who believes that all anglers should be doing their bit to safeguard fish health in the UK. Derek explained: "Virus outbreaks were getting all the press, but research revealed that the bigger killers were a relatively small group of bacteria which the Environment Agency confirmed were present in the majority of fish mortalities they attended in 2013. “It has been proven under laboratory conditions that disease can be transferred on nets to fish, and I feel, as anglers, we have a duty of care to look into any avenue that can help ensure healthier fish stocks.
Particles have long been renowned as great carp catchers, but in recent years they have fallen by the wayside and often get overlooked. Peter Bolt at Orpington Tackle recognised the need for high-quality particles ready straight out the bag and, as a result, has launched his fresh, made-to-order particles. The Old Skool particles range includes hemp, buckwheat and parti mix and starts at £2. 50 a kilo.

Just five hours into his first trip testing a new Solar Chilli Club bait, Colin Gray's first take on the new bait resulted in this 36lb-plus mirror. Having picked up his test batch from Solar HQ on Monday evening, Colin headed straight to Darenth Big Lake where he presented an 18mm bottom bait over 1kg of matching freebies at 90 yards. With the first take coming just a few hours later and resulting in this mid-thirty, the Solar team member packed up early Tuesday morning to head back to work with a large smile on his face. The Chilli Club bait is still in development, but the results so far are incredible, as you can see from Colin's success.
I was given the Advanta power stove to test some two months ago and I am pleased to report that it’s a very reliable and sturdy piece of kit. Supplied in a small, hard case there’s no risk of it getting damaged or caked in mud and dirt in transit, which obviously helps to prolong its life. It is very compact and easily accommodated but does fold out, providing stable and secure seating for kettles, pots and pans. The robust metal feet allow it to be pushed into soft ground, ensuring the stove can be positioned level, even on the most uneven of banks.
