Since my last entry on the TC website things have once again been super, super busy. I have however managed to get out and about and I’m pleased to say that I have tripped a few up along the way. My first trip in May was an overnight session on the first day of the season on Cleverley Top Lake and after coming out dead last in the draw I managed a stunning, scaley 28lb 8oz mirror known as ‘Busted’ just a couple of hours after casting out. The remainder of the session was very quiet with no more carp but it was great to be off the mark on the tricky Top Lake so quick.
Since James Armstrong's last piece, his fishing, and life, has been absolute mayhem…in a good way. I’ve spent two nights a week targeting the ancient Leney linear that inhabits my Cambridgeshire water. I’ve seen him a number of times. It was on a mild, springlike day that I found myself drifting around in my rickety, wooden rowing boat searching for fish.
Top tackle firm's latest take on the brolly more than impresses. Those tackle boffins over at Fox just keep thinking of brilliant new ways to improve our on-bank experience – and their latest take on the brolly looks set to do exactly that. Lightweight but super strong, the new Fox Supa Brolly employs fiberglass pole construction along with the company’s new STS system giving loads of space under the shelter. Built from high-quality Ven-Tec fabric and boasting such added features as an optional front rib support, extended storm sides for even more room and multiple pegging points to give you loads of height options, Fox has created a quality piece of kit more than worth a closer look.

On form Southern Syndicate, produces another two 40lb Commons and enormous Eel. Less than three weeks after Wingham Fishery' syndicate lake produced four different forties in as many days, there has been the capture of two more 40lb+ commons from the Canterbury gravel pit. Fishing at 90-yards range in the deepest part of the lake at 17ft, 34year old mechanic, Simon Ford saw a fish show at reasonable range and cast just a single hook bait to the area. Shortly after at 1.

The film, shot on location at Linear Fisheries, sees Dave catch a number of day-ticket carp to mid-twenties, while passing on many of his tips to help you do the same. Don’t miss it – the June issue is on sale in supermarkets and newsagents from Friday, 25th May.
Marukyu is taking a little while to forge a reputation with often fickle carp anglers (it’s already hugely popular on the match scene), but trust me when I say that this stuff is absolute top quality. I have used half a dozen products from the Japanese company thus far, and the krill stands out a mile. So much so that it now goes into 90 per cent of all my stick or bag mixes. I use the SFA 450 liquid krill and the SFA 400 powdered krill in combination, as well as individually in other mixes.
A good mate of mine, Tim Norris, spent ages trying to find the right bag for his carp fishing, scouring the luggage world, and trying pretty much everything out there in the process, before settling on one of these. I asked him how he’d decided that it fit the bill and he told me that it was just the right size – just big enough for his gear without being so big that it encouraged him to take stuff that he didn’t need (we’ve all been there, right?). It was also easy to access the stuff that he needed quickly via the external pockets and the single, full-size opening and internal compartments allowed him to arrange everything neatly inside. As he was telling me all of this, I realised that the NXG sounded like it ticked all of the boxes in my search for an all-round bag that I could take anywhere.
Available in several sizes, these air-dry bags are perfect for storing baits on longer sessions. I bought a couple of the 3kg versions and the small hook-bait type from The Tackle Box earlier this year (lots of other retailers also sell them) and now use them on all my trips. I chuck a load of frozen baits in one and hang it up in my garage the night before I go fishing. They are then defrosted and ready to use the next day and can be kept in good condition while on the bank, too.
