Occasionally we are asked by companies to give fishing gear a more long-term review. A year ago, Fox asked me to review its NXr alarms and receiver set and they have stood up to my punishment and still look virtually brand new. Bite alarms have a hard life, being thrown around in your tackle bag and subjected to rain and splashes of spod mix, so a reliable set is a must. Although I am a small guy, I have a habit of throwing gear around, so they have to be sturdy.

The most versatile net that I have owned and been fortunate enough to get wet. The Scope features a telescopic, lockable pole that retracts to a miniscule 44 inches and extends to a useful six feet 10 inches. Having used it to land fish from boats and on the bank when fishing extremely long zigs, this compact net has been perfect for all the fishing scenarios that I have found myself in and lends itself to mobile or static anglers alike. Performance: 9/10Value: 7/10RRP: £164.

Shimano produced the original big-pit carp reel many moons ago in the form of ground-breaking Long Cast Baitrunner, which has always been the preferred reel of many specimen anglers. The XT-A is the new modernised version of its predecessor, which is just as reliable and as much of a bombproof workhorse as before, with a few additional features that help to improve on what was an already great product. The slow oscillation helps achieve an even better uninhibited line lay to aid distance and accuracy when casting. Constructed from modern materials and with a more up-to-date design, the XT-A Long Cast has been reworked to improve durability and the internal gears redesigned to increase the cranking power.

Reflections on the first ever female World Carp Classic victory. A fortnight ago, Total Carp magazine brought you the story of the Dutch masters, Lizette Beunders and Bianca Venema, who won the World Carp Classic on Lake Bolsena. The landscape of competition carp fishing has been redrawn by the two Dutch masters after a week of building tension in the picturesque Italian countryside. The 2013 World Carp Classic trophy went to Lizette Beunders 43 and Bianca Venema 37, who brushed aside their opposition to win by one of the biggest margins, over 173 Kgs (382lbs), in the history of the competition.

Established over 12 years ago, Wildmoor Waters is great for anglers and non-anglers alike. Wildmoor Waters is a very well-stocked carp fishery where anglers regularly catch lots of fish and we’ve lost count of the number of PB’s that have been broken here. Located on the edge of South Cerney in the Cotswold Water Park, Wildmoor Waters is just five minutes away from Cirencester and is within easy striking distance of Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and Cheltenham. With its two well-stocked lakes, Wildmoor is the perfect venue for any carp angler – whether on a day ticket or for a longer session in a lodge or on the bank.
