I’ll be honest, I’m not sure this is an absolute must-have product. After all, we’ve managed to spod from a bucket for a long time without having a rod rest attached to it. However, that’s not to say that some anglers won’t find it very handy, so there is a definite place for it. The first feature is that it holds a square bucket at a comfortable height without the need to any added accessories.

There are loads of these lead-free leaders around these days, including some good and some not so good ones. Fishing a lake that’s infested with weed, I fancied trying this one out because I felt that it would sink a little less quickly than leadcore, settling on to the weed more, and obviously the colour would blend in. On the subject of colour, and this is not unique to this material, why are all green leaders and hook links so dark? Pull most types of fresh weed out of a lake and it’s a much more vibrant green and, unless it’s old, is rarely as dark as this. Maybe it’s one of those angler perception things, but I’d much rather the material matched the weed and not just conformed to trends.

I’ve had two sets of Reubens over the years, having left a set on the car park at Linear Fisheries some time back, but the replacements (which I had stamped with the TC logo at the time) have been my scales of choice ever since. They’re the classic dial scales, mine reading from 0 to 60lb (if only) in 1oz increments, so are extremely easy to read. They did have a small light in them originally (a few were made at the time) but that has long since given up the ghost. However, the newer versions have a more discreet and reliable light in them, making them easy to read at night.

Where casting accuracy is concerned, marking your main line has become paramount and over the years various methods have been tried to do so efficiently. Thanks to the newly launched Glo Pro, the days of fiddly marker knots and obstructive folded tape are long gone. Available in four hi-viz colours – orange, green, yellow and pink – this luminous liquid line marker presents an easy and convenient method to quickly mark your main line for clipping up at a specific range. Supplied as a pot and brush duo, the Glow Pro can be applied to form a tidy tapered colour marker.

TC reader Aaron Lends says: There’s no shying away from the recent trend for hook sharpening, but in all honesty I wasn’t that sold because I don’t expect to buy a packet of hooks and then sit there sharpening them; it just doesn’t make sense to me. Well that was until I received the original Point Doctor and the Point Dr 2 from the guys at TC. I found that with these very forgiving instruments I didn’t have to create a new needle-sharp point allowing me one fish a hook, but they are fantastic at touching up hooks that I had already had takes on, thus prolonging their life. I start with the much coarser Point Dr 2 (the red one), which takes a fine layer of hook coating off with every swipe.

After first seeing this at the recent Tackle & Guns Trade Show we were keen to get some in the office to give it a closer inspection. One criticism often levelled at the old forms of marking your line is that tape, elastic or braid can slip when you are playing fish. Due to its low profile on the line, the Glo Pro will sail through the rings with no hindrance. Simply paint on an inch-long section of the liquid and wait a minute for it to dry.

TC reader Carl Cook says: I recently found the need to fish from the luxury of a decked swim and required a solution to support my rods. JAG has solved the problem with these brilliant Stage Bites. I found the stainless-steel pieces to be of excellent quality, as you would expect from this brand. I currently use the matching stainless kit from JAG, although the inserts will accept any standard-thread buzz bar.

No matter how die-hard the angler claims to be, you won’t find one that doesn’t take his or her phone while out on the bank. Consequently, there’s a real need to keep them charged up. Well this handy little device is a complete godsend; from a full battery I have performed no less than eight charges from empty to full. With two USB outlets, multiple devices can be charged at any one time, making this ideal for the modern carp angler.

It’s important to have a sharp hook. I want a fish to pick up my hook bait and be hooked straightaway. I have been using the Taska Flat File for some time and I have to say that I am impressed with the results. I don’t like to heavily sharpen my hooks but a bit of a touch-up after landing a carp can’t go amiss.
