Although relatively unheard of in the carp market, Cyprinus has been kicking up a storm for the last nine years, selling fishing gear direct from eBay and Amazon. Offering high-quality carp fishing gear at low prices, it sells everything from bivvies to unhooking mats. With many auctions on its eBay site starting at a miniscule 99p, there are huge savings to be made. We recently received the Quick Erect bivvy and what struck us immediately was its compact nature and lightweight construction.

The Z1 is classed as a 1½-man shelter, so is slightly larger than average. I’ve never taken half a mate fishing, but if I want to take loads of gear and ‘plot up’ this is spot-on. It’s just as quick to set it up and dismantle too, despite the extra size. I’ve been really impressed because the thoughtful features are evident from the first use.

The conventional brolly just got better. With a huge majority of anglers slimming down their tackle and wishing to fish short, fast, effective sessions the Lo Pro was born. With a ridiculously miniscule weight of a mere 3. 3kg, excluding pegs and bag, this is an ultra-light design that will fit in most rod quivers with ease with a length of six feet.

It is surely one of the most popular and successful bivvies of all time because I remember seeing an Easy Dome or 10 on just about every lake that we used to venture to while doing our features. Indeed, I have owned two myself over the years – a one-man version, which I bought long before starting work at DHP, some 12 years ago, and later, a two-man version, which I used for French fishing excursions. It was the epitome of quick erection but at the same time offered a full-on, all-round shelter capable of keeping the occupant warm and dry. Setting up, as I touched up, was ridiculously simple and involved simply taking the bivvy out of its bag – which was never quite big enough when trying to put it back in – pulling up on the central boss, locking the joints in place and it was up.

First Look! Similarly to all the short rods now available, several companies are producing compact versions of their bivvies and, in the Reflex, Fox has nailed it. Although I haven’t fished from it, I did spend two nights under this one at Carp In The Park and I absolutely loved it. Not just for its small nature (which in truth, as a brolly angler, is still amply big enough for me) but for the features it boasts and the all-round build quality. RipStop Ven-Tec material creates a rugged, waterproof and breathable material that will not let you down and which, if you nick it accidentally, will not worsen.

When we saw this at the Tackle & Guns Trade Show it literally stopped us in our tracks. The compact design, top build quality and unquestionable value for money really did blow us away. A simplistic but effective two-rib, pram-hood design ensures quick erection and with the fitted porch offers extra protection for when the elements take a turn for the worse. The Royale Classic features a mesh or removable PVC clear-panel front door and two mozzie-mesh panels on the front that keep bugs at bay and supply a welcome airflow in the warmer weather.

Following on from the award-winning, highly successful, Royale Classic One-Man, the Euro Dome has been built around the winning design. It offers the same practicality and function ability, only in a larger format for the angler preferring to fish longer sessions or, as the name suggests, who ventures to Europe, where a little extra space is always very welcome. Differing from other larger shelters, the Royale Euro Dome boasts a completely removable inner dome, which is approximately the same size as the Classic predecessor. This, of course, means the overall footprint of the Euro is larger than the Classic, lending itself perfectly to the angler wishing to take plenty of kit.

The single biggest disadvantage with a brolly is that the inner support frame compromises the internal space. Sitting on your bedchair and watching the water generally means that you either have to suffer backache or sit as far forward as possible. That’s fine in the summer, but not great in the rain. The standout feature of the Supa Brolly is its unique STS mechanism.

I’ve reviewed the Supa Brolly on a couple of occasions and, once I’d got to grips with threading the front pole (when I bought mine, it was from a batch where this pole was too long), I was smitten. On the subject of the pole, while it’s easy enough to attach, and is essential to maintain the round profile, it does mean slightly more effort compared with other brollies. This is ostensibly a brolly but, in truth, it has the internal dimensions and space of a more substantial shelter. Following requests from its many loyal customers, Fox has now introduced this smaller, compact version, which is more in keeping with a brolly in terms of size and footprint.

The original Supa Brolly was launched to critical acclaim and was followed soon afterwards by the ‘system’ that included zip-in front with mozzie and standard options with doors and windows and suchlike. Not able to get hold of the simple brolly due to its popularity, I bought a system when I discovered that Chapman’s Angling Centre was one of only a few shops that actually had a delivery. I didn’t particularly want the infill and certainly not the mozzie front, but it was either this or miss out altogether. So, out came the credit card and the next day the Supa Brolly system duly arrived.

TC reader Ian Smith from Westbury, Wiltshire says: "I’ve had my Supa Brolly for nearly a year. In fact, I got it when they first came out, or at least when Fox introduced the full-blown ‘system’ version complete with groundsheet and infills. "I absolutely love it and have yet to find any fault whatsoever. "The four ribs at the back all contact the ground, which provides stability and adds to the internal space.

For years I’d used a set of stainless steel bivvy pegs that were made for me by Martin Locke of Solar Tackle fame. You know how it is, though, you lose one or two of them here and there and then realise that you’ve suddenly got none left! It was a revelation for me therefore when Top-Notch brought out its version. I’ve been using these pegs for something like three or four years now and have got to say they are made from extremely good quality stainless, can be hit with a mallet if needs be and are virtually indestructible. They are available in a 5in stumpy version that are ideal for hard ground, a standard 8in version, and a nice touch is that they come supplied in a hard tubular case.
