ESP Curve-Shanx Hooks - 23/04/2009

Five years ago I was given a packet of brand-new hooks from Kamasan, called the Carp Maxx. This was the first Teflon-coated, short, curved-shank hook on the market and was then being tested by the likes of Dave Lane, who was an ESP consultant.

It was Dave that first gave me some of the hooks and I have been a huge admirer, and user, of the pattern ever since. I’ve said as much on several occasions, in various Total Carp features and reviews.

So, what has this got to do with the new ESP Curve-Shanx? Well, in a nutshell, it’s the same hook. Not the same design; the actual hook. Kamasan is a sister company of ESP and the pattern has basically made the leap from one brand to the other, the latter being a more recognised carp marque. I’ve recently seen it intimated elsewhere, from people who should know better, that the Curve-Shanx is a version of ‘their’ own pattern. While there are plenty of good such hooks out there, with ample room in the market for them all, this was unequivocally the first.

The pattern lends itself perfectly to both bottom-bait and pop-up presentations. While there is probably no such thing, this version of pattern is as close as it gets to being the only hook you’ll ever need, especially given the critical, in-between sizes – 5,7 and 9 – available. It turns without the need for extended shrink-tubing additions and it certainly stays in once the carp is hooked. I’ve never had one break or bend on me and the hook points maintain a sharpness throughout multiple use. All in all, I think the Curve-Shanx is an excellent pattern, very well made and reliable.

THE VERDICT
A great all-round pattern, suitable for a multitude of presentations
