Shimano Aero Technium XT-B - 23/04/2009
While I never actually owned a set, I was always a fan of the original Aero Technium 10000XT reel. With its solid build, classy look and immaculate performance, it was, for some time, the reel to be seen with.
The remarkably slow oscillation was a first and such a movement, and resultant line lay, had never been witnessed on a carp reel before. So, when Shimano launched the new and improved, all-singing, all-dancing XT-B version, I had to take a closer look. It’s now a 12000 version, which means increased line capacity, and it now features the innovative Baitrunner II system on the front of the spool. This is evident on many of Shimano’s newer reels and allows instant transmission from free-spool to locked-up mode with just a fraction of a turn of the front-drag knob. It took me a little while to get used to this system, but once cracked it was easy to use.
I tested the Magnesium Aero Technium last year and, while undoubtedly impressive, the lightness of that particular reel didn’t necessarily appeal. I prefer something with a more robust feel and, if I am honest, this almost certainly requires some additional weight. Line lay, while the oscillation is not as slow as its predecessor, is immaculate. In fact, the line lay may almost have been too good on the original and my fear was that where so many parallel coils were on the spool, there was always potential for the coil in front to hinder the one behind on the cast. Thee are no such worries on the XT-B.
My only other gripe with the Magnesium was that it was a bit too shiny. That might sound odd, but it almost looked too good to use. Not this one – far from it. The XT-B looks the nuts; with its cobalt/gunsmoke appearance it is definitely one for the carp fishing connoisseur. But it’s in the performance where this reel excels: casting, retrieving and playing fish is a joy. I really rate this reel and, if you have this sort of budget, I would have no hesitation in recommending it. With an RRP of £449 it’s not cheap, but if you can afford them you won’t be disappointed
THE VERDICT
√ Sturdy performer with a feel of quality. The Aero Technium 12000XT-B boasts great line lay and ability to chuck big leads big distances, as well as a much-improved retrieve rate compared to some previous models
× There is not yet a shallow spool available, much to the chagrin of braid users, including myself.
