First Impressions Maver 12ft Medusa Carp Rod - 02/07/2009

Have you ever wondered which test curve set of rods to buy?

It’s always a tricky one, given that we all often visit different waters with various angling requirements. Light, 2.75lb wands will cover most fishing, but now and then you might just benefit from a 3lb version. Then, what about the odd occasion when you get invited to fish your mate’s big syndicate and you need to be chucking big leads or PVA bags that bit further?

Well, Maver thinks it has come up with the answer in the form of the three-tipped Medusa rod. That’s right, the Medusa has three separate tip sections, all of which fit snugly onto the single butt. So, instead of having to buy three sets of rods, one set will cover you for all eventualities.

The Medusa comes supplied with 2.75lb, 3lb and 3.5lb options. As a result, the butt section is not the slimmest, but then it can’t be if the Medusa is to live up to its tag of being a true all-round rod. Although this is my first look at the rod, I am keen to spend a little more time in its company and find out how each combination stands up to a bit of use. Initial impressions, however, are pretty good and the full-carbon blanks seem pretty robust. The fixtures and fittings are in keeping with modern trends too, with quality guides and a very neat-looking reel seat adorning the rods. There is also a 13ft version available, with 50mm butt ring, but I have only seen the 12ft rod so far.

It remains to be seen just how well the butt section copes with the three tips, and their different properties, but Maver insists that the Medusa has been tested thoroughly and each combination works perfectly. Fair play to Maver if this is true, because it might just save a lot of carp anglers a hell of a lot of money.
