Tester: Marc Coulson
Test Period: Three Months

Total Carp deputy editor Jon Bones and I have long been a fan and user of Fox’s various Evolution bivvies, so, when asked to test the latest version I was only too happy. In keeping with previous models, the Evo is extremely easy to transport because it packs away into a reasonably thin package, although I soon realised, on first inspection, that this one seemed wider than any I’d had before.

Once out of the bag it was a similar story, with the same easy erection, and I had it set up in less than a minute. As well as the traditional Evo construction, I immediately noted a few extras. A second, inner front panel, made of mozzie mesh, is present, with both this and the solid front being detachable. They also each roll back and can be used together or independently. This means that there are several options for how to set the Evo up, which offers greater versatility. However, for me, the Evolution is all about ease of use, lightness and transportation – simple, but extremely effective and ideally suited to the angler who wants to move quickly when needed. With the additional panels and suchlike, the Evo has become a more all-round bivvy, but it’s potentially lost that element of convenience. I have to say that the mozzie front came straight out and would never go back in the bag. It just adds too much bulk to the packed-away shelter.

I am not criticising the Evolution for this because, to be fair, you can remove all of the extras and use it in the same form as the previous models. This then makes it ideal once again for quick moves and rapid erection and dismantling.

The material is vastly improved and it seems that the problem with weak poles that one or two of its predecessors suffered has been solved. Dimensions are similar, but one or two slight improvements have been made. Also, with the winter skin attached, which is available separately, it becomes a very snug, insulated shelter, which will appeal to carp anglers of all ilks.

Despite the compact nature of the Evo when packed away, and its ease of use, I have used this one with my Nash Wide Boy bedchair and have still had just enough room inside. I don’t like too much space in my bivvy normally, so this is perfect.

VERDICT

Great Evo design, easy to use and extremely quick to erect and dismantle. Once up it gives ample coverage too.

× The additional front sections and mozzie mesh detract slightly from the original Evolution concept.
