
So, you wanna catch a big Carp.
IAN CHILLCOTT discusses whether you can actually target the biggest fish in the lake, or if it is more a case of waiting for your number to come up.
Being the editor of Britain’s biggest-selling carp magazine means that, very often, Marc Coulson has to field a variety of questions. And do you know the one that he is asked the most, and by some considerable margin too? No, well here it is: “How do I single out the biggest fish in my lake?” I must admit that, travelling around as I do, it crops up in any number of conversations that I have. Unfortunately, this is not a subject that can easily be skipped over, although there is one response that will definitely not give the angler the answer he is looking for: “Just keep fishing the pond until that fish makes a mistake with whatever tactics you are employing at the time.” In saying that, I have a feeling, like me, that you would want to have a little more control over your destiny! The thought and effort you put in to targeting an individual carp will, I have no doubt, increase the feeling of elation once your target is resting in the confines of your landing net. So, in an effort not to simply bore the poor creature onto your unhooking mat, what exactly can be done to increase our chances?
