Lead Setups Part 1
Helicopter rigs and running leads. What are they, how do you set them up and how can you use each to your advantage? DAVE LANE explains all.
In this and the next issue I will be taking a look at the safety factor of our lead setups and, more importantly, the ease with which the lead can be detached from the main line or leader should a breakage occur. I’ll also be explaining the pros and cons of various lead setups as well as demonstrating how to construct your own safe setups. As conscientious anglers, we all assume that we are doing our best to keep everything nice and safe, but it is a fine line between a rig that can be easily discarded by the carp and one that could, in theory, prove their ultimate downfall. Firstly, let’s look at the most controversial of rig components, leadcore leaders. Leadcore is mainly used to help camouflage the final few feet of line leading up to the rig, with an added bonus of providing a strong and durable end section to our setup.
