THE CHILLCOTT FILES: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
Following on from his guide to getting the most from particle baits, with a session to remember, Ian Chillcott proves just how effective they can be.
It’s a brave man who tests Ian ‘Chilly’ Chillcott’s metal, but TC decided to challenge the ex-paratrooper to prove that he really does know his stuff when it comes to catching carp. Having explained the technical ins and outs of particles, and their uses, over the past two issues, it is time to head for the lake to demonstrate that particles catch carp. Well, he grabbed the challenge with both hands, proving beyond doubt that his tactics work even before I arrive to shoot the feature. I find Chilly singing and playing the air guitar as an AC/DC track blares from his car radio. Standing in the car park he’s sorting himself out, having got a little wet when landing a sizeable carp just moments before.
“I didn’t know that carp of that calibre were swimming around in this lake,” churps an excited Chilly. “It’s a beautiful specimen, and we should get back to the swim and sort it out.” Wandering around the Essex venue he explains the situation. He arrived yesterday and spent the day wandering the banks, baiting a few spots and watching carp feeding in the margins. Not wanting to wet a line, catch a few and potentially ruin his chances for today, he resisted casting in, despite having carp tearing up the spots he’d baited with hemp and tigers. By this morning it all got a bit too much, though, and he just couldn’t put off trying to catch one any longer. Placing a rig just the other side of some marginal weed, on a clear spot that he’d carefully baited with a little hemp using a spod, he didn’t have to wait very long for a bite.
